Anyone hear about the President Obama's proposed bill that would place a luxury tax on motorcycles with MSRPs over $9,999.99? I will provide more details as I hear them, but I believe the quote that followed his proposal was..."It is time for Americans to start spending responsibly." Luxury items should be discouraged and taxed at a higher rate. If this comes into fruition, I am really going to regret voting for him. That is simply absurd. If anything, there should be tax incentives for purchasing motorcycles due to alleviating the demand for oil with better fuel economy. Don't hybrid cars get a tax break? Please say this is not true. |

That would be a really goofy thing to do, especially since they made it possible to write off the taxes on the purchase of a new HD product this year. That being said, I don't remember the last time the Gubmint did anything that made sense. |

If you don't already regret voting for him before this, I have to wonder. He's done a lot of things that are a lot more significant than this. |

Link? I can't find even a blurb of it on the internet. Only news of the tax CREDIT you can get from buying a new car, truck, or motorcycle. |

Yeah, the only thing I've heard about is the tax credit for buying a bike under $40-something-thousand bucks this year. I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch unless there's a link - and besides, I doubt I'll be buying a new bike anytime soon... Here's a link to the IRS site about a tax credit (apparently this BBS won't let me link something that has a comma in the URL - dumb): http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=205863,00.html (Message edited by seanp on April 01, 2009) |

I read in the opposite in the news this morning... that there would be a deduction allowed to offset state sales taxes on most bikes. " [the] bill has a tax break for new vehicles purchased after Feb. 16. It allows the deduction of sales taxes and excise taxes for the purchase of a new car, light truck, motorcycle or a motor home of as much as $49,500." That's from the Minneapolis Star Tribune http://www.startribune.com/politics/42164752.html? page=2&c=y, but I read similar stories on Cars.com and US News & World Report. I can find no news sources on this proposed tax you're talking about. Please provide references. |
