Today is a beautiful day here in SE MI. Therefore, I decided I should ride the bike to work. I ride the bike through town and everything is normal. I hop on I-94 and every is still normal, then all of a sudden the bike drops out of 5th and starts revving up. I down shifted to 4th and the bike still couldnt find the gear. I down shifted to 3rd and it finally found it. I got off at the next exit to pull in at a gas station. Just as I was turning into the station I hear a clunking and grinding noise and then the bike dies. No good can come of this. I pushed the bike off to the side of the lot and started the bike up in neutral. The bike will not stay in neutral for some reason it slips out and, presumably to 1st, and dies.

I called my cousin and he showed up with his truck and trailer, so I was able to get the bike home. When I was wheeling the bike into the garage the trans sounds like some one is shaking a can of rocks.

Has anyone had to replace/rebuild their trans? I have no idea what this is going to cost me and to be honest I dont have the money to fix it. What a way to kick off a riding season.

These buell trannies are tuff. Especially the pre 06 Str8 cut gears.

I'm trying to think of some way that might be in the primary w/ the shift linkage.

This does not sound good. The XB's dont have the trap door like the tubers and XLs. You will have to split the case to get to the tranny. Not hard, just alotta work.

my first thought is that it might be that small spring mechanism located around the shifter shaft that you see when you take off the primary cover. maybe it ramdomly fell apart.. but im probably wrong.. if you(the reader) know what im talking about, what is that mechanism for???

Ochoa,

Thats what I was hoping too. I have seen a X1 get off track and the thing skipped gears and got stuck few times.

ok good that you mentioned barker, because when I was replacing a bad primary.. I accidentally dislodged one of the two little springs and the contraption moved in a way that when I attached the spring back on, it was slightly assembled wrong and I had a hard time shifting.. I had no clue what it was, but it had to do with replacing the primary right? so I drained the oil, took off the primary and had a look see.. everything seemed right, its hard to describe how minute this mixup was, but a small piece that the little spring mechanism was attached to had to be flipped 180.. that tiny tiny thingy no bigger than a dime was the problem. check that out.. check that out, take off the primary, whats the worst that can happen, your bikes isnt going where. I going to change out my primary fluid out of necessity in the next week or so, if you want picks let me know beforehand

Pics would be very much appreciated Ochoa.

I went to the HD dealer and talked to them about it. In the event I need a new trans, its going to run me $2k-$3k. The tech said that it is possible that the clutch is old and it could have dislodged and caused this problem.

I am very uneducated and unfamiliar with transmissions. Any and all help is very much appreciated.

You need to have someone who knows Buell trans look at your bike,or get a service manual and start reading. These transmissions are for all intents "bullet proof".
I cant imagine anything major went wrong but if it is internal the engine needs to come out and get stripped apart.
You will need a couple tools you can purchase or make.
Your dealer can call Buell for you and look into goodwill,if they wont find a dealer that will.
If Buell rejects it there will be a Faxed copy sent to your dealer.
Ask for a copy, for your records.
Then call cust service yourself..........

I just drained the primary and attempted to remove the cover, but no dice. The cover wouldnt budge, at all. I removed all the bolts I could find in it, but I was unsuccessful.

There was a lot less fluid in there than I was expecting. I would ball park it and say there was 3-4oz of fluid that came out. On the end of the drain plug there was a clump of very fine metal shavings. This is no good. There is a lot of seepage around the cover, but no puddle or drip spots on the garage floor.

The bike is not within warranty so all repairs are going to be coming out of my nearly empty pockets.

Anyone want to steal the bike so I can collect the insurance money?

the shavings are normal.. and the primary should hold a bit less that a quart of oil. did you take off the clutch inspection cover AND remove the clutch ramp assembly?
if you didnt, there's your problem with the primary removal : D

I took both of the smaller plates off the primary cover if thats what they're called. I couldnt get the Prim. cover to pull away even a little bit.

What about the fluid though? There are 32oz in a quart and only 3-4ish came out. Where did the rest go?

Well I'm bringing this thread back to life for people looking for an update. I bought the bike off of ebay from DTMB. First thing I found was the primary chain tensioner was backed all the way out and the lock nut was missing. After taking the motor out and splitting the cases I found a lot of carnage. 1st/2nd shift fork was broken with parts embedded into one of the countershaft gears 2 mainshaft gears and 2 countershaft gears had lost all of their teeth. Needless to say today I'm looking for transmission parts to price out how much its gonna run. I'm just glad the trans doesn't share oil with the rest of the motor.

I just had the same exact thing happen to me on the interstate the day I purchased my XB12SCG. It's an '06 with 4500 miles. I lost 5th, and 4th. I was able to grab 3rd, but by the time I was able to get off the interstate to a gas station, that was all she wrote. It's at Shumate Harley in Kennewick Washington for repairs. I'm sure it's going to cost me dearly. I wanted to buy the all black '09. By the time I'm done I might as well have. So much for saving money.
