I know both the M2 and X1 were made during overlapping years. My question is why would someone prefer buying an M2 and not the X1 when shopping for a new bike? Was X1 a lot more expensive new? Just trying to understand the marketing strategy back in early 2000. Also, what were the retail prices for these bikes back in 2000. Thanks. |

The X1 has a more aggressive riding position and styling cues that some people don't care for. The M2/S3 ergonomics are almost identical and much more comfortable on longer rides IMO. |

X1 had more expensive forks, as well as fuel injection......heads too........did the m2 have thunderstorms? |

All the 99 models had thunderstorm heads. |

but the M2 had mild cams - in the US that is, not in the export version. The M2 had no tach in 99 and 00. It was the only Buell Twin you could get with a carb in 99-02. There are many people who say the M2 was the best overall Buell... Court does, even though I don't really know the reason. Probably because it was the best Buell for the money back then. Like the XB9X these days...?? Anyone? |

I know the gent who was one of the lead engineers on the X1 personally told me that the M2 was better than the X1 in his opinion. |

probably because the x1 was more complex and has more stuff runnin through it, meaning more wiring, fuel pump, 02 sensor. the m2 was bare bones, probably ran good for the price, performance does not compare to the x1, it simply cant now i might agree with the m2 on top for the price and comfort area but an x1 will kick an m2's a$$!!! |

I got the M2 because it was a carbed bike. I didn't want FI at the time, and there were problems with the FI in 99 and 2000 anyway. It is not difficult to massage an M2 up to X1 performance either, btw, and I can cruise all day on it if need be. Kilroy |

The M2 (because of the cams) didn't suffer from the midrange hole that plagued the X1 and S3 in stock trim. The stock X1 muffler actually made pretty good top end power, but the midrange sucked. During normal street riding at reasonable RPMs, the M2 feels more powerful vs. the stock X1. |

I'd take the M2 in a heartbeat. . . . . |

well i have never seen a stock buell roaming the streets......i have a race ecm and a force pipe which is nothing but a top end drag pipe.......i have zero hole in my mid range, tuning makes all the difference on any bike...i know from helping tune ls1 cars that timing and fuell can make a monster cam car run relatively smooth around town daily driving.....and an x1 has ceramic air filter bearings so there! Ha lol |

Amateur. I replaced my ceramic air filter bearings long ago with titanium ones. They don't last as long, but the added performance is well worth it. |

newbie, if you lube them with MOBIL 1 they last three times as long! |

I got to test ride an M2 and a X1 back to back, freeway and city riding. I preferred the M2 for everything but WOT, the cams were just right for the commuting and occasional pleasure riding I do. Knowing the X1 was high zoot back then I wanted to want it, but just preferred the M2. When my cams started showing premature wear I had the replaced with stock profile, if it ain't broke... Besides all that other stuff Hootowl said, the M2 felt a lot stronger through the mid range (where I spend most of my time). That's my $.02. I'd still like to maybe buy a clean X1 one of these days, but I'll always own my M2. I'd stick with those ceramic bearings guys, I heard those titanium bits flex under load and really increase your friction loss, and you don't need to add heavy lubes to keep them rolling. Sheesh... I have my crankcase breather routed into the airbox and directed at the bearings. The spooge provides a continuous total loss oiling solution. |

I have a 2002 M2 and absolutely love it. I also have a 2001 S3 with the same motor and suspension as the X1 (hotter cams, fuel injection, USD forks). They are both great bikes. The S3 is faster and offers a smoother ride. The M2 is easier to ride, has a flatter power band, and seems more agile, (if that is possible). My choice, if I could have only one bike, would have to be the M2. |

I'll never forget my X1 purchase. It was a LAST MOMENT change for me.I was (CASH in hand) at the dealer to buy the '98S1W in white/blue.I asked about the new X1 i'd heard of and was interested in the FI. We walked into the back where they'd just uncrated a new X1.I bought it on the spot. No haggling necessary. It's still VERY prized, despite not being the most powerful in my stable. Better forks than the M2,better power too,and i've whacked out an M2.THe M2 has a fat touring type seat. The X1,more sculpted, but not as nice as the S1W. |

Great input, thanks. In my case, I did not know any better and the X1 I bought was the first and only Buell I ever rode. I suppose an M2 might have been a better choice for me since I hardly ever take advantage of the "top-end" that X1 offers. Now what the heck is this ceramic air filter thingy??! First I hear about it. |

And the Divider shaft where the kinippitty pin goes in. You will need a can of slack to get it out for inspection. |

my x1's heads breathe so well they suck the bearings out of the filter and blow them out of the exhaust like buckshot. i keep blowing out my rear tire. |
