So I went to change the grips on the ULY. I started with the drivers side, as I was twisting and pulling the grip I hear a terrible crack and the grip comes off with half the plastic throttle sleeve in my hand... I first think... Are you fkin kidding me? Then I noticed how thin the plastic throttle sleeve is!!! It's incredible! So I started to squeeze the grip and sure enough more cracking and pieces are breaking off and falling out of the grip. What a turd part. I've never seen one this brittle and frail before... I'm not happy. I can't ride today, I'm really not happy. |

Did you pull the switch housing first? Step 1 - housing off Step 2 - cables out of grip Step 3 - grip slides off bar VERY easily Installation is the opposite of removal. The sleeve can be thin because there's a metal bar filling it up when the grip is installed. (Message edited by ratbuell on March 21, 2009) |

No, I didn't pull the switch housing before.. On other bikes the throttle tube usually isn't so thin. I'm not blaming buell on this one, but the part is stil a turd in my mind. Didn't think it was so frail. The upside is it comes with the grips and is probably readily available @ the dealer so I won't be down for long... Just having a bad day. COuldn't do the headlight mod, cuz I couldn't get the wires out and one the screws on my fairing is messed. I need a beer. |

The last time I bought Buell replacement grips the throttle side came pre-installed on a new sleeve. Aftermarket grips obviously can't do this as they are meant to fit several bikes. Usually I find it easier to split the old grip lengthwise with a razor knife and peel them away. They're toast anyway right? Is it possible you have heated grips which may explain why the throttle sleeve was so brittle? I've never had heated grips so I'm just guessing here. BC Steve |

Did the passenger's side come off any easier? |

Well, if you didn't pull the switch housing, you still have half the sleeve stuck to the bar. The end that holds the throttle/idle cable ends is *inside* the switch housing, that could be why you had to pull and pull and pull and break. Take it apart *slowly* so you can note the routing of the cables. A binding throttle is much more than just an annoyance, it's dangerous. If you need pages out of a shop manual, or even the instructions off the Buell heated grip kit, let me know and I can send you the .pdf files. For the headlight mod (or anything that involves pulling a pin out of a connector), I have a set of dental picks I bought at a hobby shop. Straight, angled, curved, and some goofy dogleg thing...but they work AWESOME for hitting the release tabs and pulling pins out whole. |

Thanks Rat, I'll try something like that for the headlight. |

No heated grips. I'm just that strong. I'm a pretty big deal. |

That's why I always cut the old ones off. A little slice with a razor knife and start peeling. |

Better be careful when you change the oil then... Or when you're choking the chicken. |

Adam, While your removing the switch housing to take out whats left of the old throttle sleeve, you might want to check your 2 throttle cables very closely. I would be a little concerned that all the twisting/prying force was going through them while you were removing the old grip. Just trying to avoid another "throttle cable left me stranded" thread in the future... |

Right, will do. I'll lube them while I'm at it. |

I usually just use an air hose and blow them off. Start near the cable housing and work the grip back and forth as you blow air into the grip and it will expand and slide off. Put them on the same way. 30 second job. |

I always use my pocket knife and slice them off. I've noticed Erik like to use as light of weight parts as he can get away with. It all adds up. The throttle housing has a tit on the front half that lines up with a hole in the handlebar. That's what keeps everything from moving and must be lined up to reassemble. |
