Guys fired up my 02' M2 Saturday after a long winter's nap. Ride was going great till my riding partner and I crested a knoll on a windy river road. We were taking it easy due to gravely roads and frost heaves but I guess it was not easy enough. My partner hit the frost heave on the yellow line and managed to hold on, I however hit in the right wheel track where there was a sunken patch from last year making it a crater. Brakes came on front suspension bottomed out rear hit and launched me froward enough to cause the front tire to loose traction on gravel scattered on the other side of the heave. All conditions ripe for trouble. Bike went down on the left side and I flew to the middle of the road. I was wearing good gear and have 95% of my skin. I'm bruised and battered. My jacket has significant rash and my Brand new HJC Symax 2 helmet is trashed!. Bike had bent bars, clutch lever controls Mirror and blinker all have significant dmg. Left side of the tank is trashed as well as the shifter. Minor rash on the tail and Derby Cover. I have two questions for the collective. Do I dare attempt to straighten the bars or simply replace? I have full coverage and never made a claim on my insurance(20 years of paying in), is one claim likely to raise my premium? |

First, glad your gear did its job, and that you had it on. Sorry to hear that you needed it. Opinions on straightening bars are about like plugging/replacing tires that have a nail in them. It is your bike, your choice. Given what new bars cost, I would replace it if it were mine. And the insurance thing is something that will be between you and your agent and insurance company. Given todays insurance/economic climate...... |

You never know about insurance companies, they seem to vary a lot. Ak's right check with your agent before you do anything drastic. Your functional parts won't be a whole lot, and the tank you may come up with here or on ebay. I'm just tickled that you came out of this in one piece. Which 5% of your skin did you lose? My left Kneecap is missing its skin. My Jeans don't have a mark on them, weird.I was leaning towards new bars anyway Ive straightened bars on dirtbikes before and they NEVER feel the same even when they measured straight. I had a couple of scrapes from a bad tank bag experience and I've never been crazy about the Blue so I'm thinking of a Color change. Molten or Harley Orange perhaps. Im sure the tank can be sanded up and painted like new no need for a new one is there? Im thinking of replacing the Shifter with the Billet Aluminum one from American Sportbike. Anyone have experience with it? Psy |

Glad you are okay Denim can be surprisingly abrasive! The Banke shifter is expensive, the updated shifter your '02 came with should do fine, but if you get a hook up on replacement parts maybe you'll want to go for it. I've got a set of stock bars on a shelf, they are unlikely to ever be put back on my bike. You are welcome to them, just pm your address. Some aftermarket bars are significantly cheaper than new from the dealer replacements (they about doubled in price a few years ago). The clubman's are selling for around $30 or so, maybe try the 1125cr bars if they aren't too much? I might have some M2 blinkers in a box too if you want to replace with OEM stuff. If you make a claim they should cover your safety equip too, so you can get another Symax and jacket (if it's textile you probably should). -Mike |

Check your deductable(I know I spelled that wrong) before making a claim! I had $1800 in damage and a $1000 for deduc. After the rate hike it cost me a lot more than a $1000! Closer to $3000! |

Tks Hugie already there man. I just got off the phone with the insurance ppl. I acted like I was considering dropping my Full coverage and had some claim questions. Turns out my deductible is $1000 and a claim will raise my insurance $300 a year. No thanks! Dropping to Liability will save me $200 a year. So I'm dropping Full coverage and fixing the Bike myself....man Insurance is a racket! Littlebuggles I still have my OEM blinkers too so I may go back to them or get some cheap ones (thats what broke, POSs anyways) I may PM you about that OEM handlebar tho $80 new from the Dealer. Shifter linkage is $265.42 from the dealer so I may go ebay but for that $$ I might as well go with the Banke if I go new. I guess I better do some searching on here about painting Plastic Gas tanks and Mirror threads. |

Forwarded an e-mail reply I received a few years ago from Al regarding tank painting. Are you using stock mirrors? (I prolly have one or two of the short stalked round ones I can give you, I switched to the taller Blast parts a few years ago for a better view behind). The Buell website shows the updated shifter kit at $148 U.S. dollars, perhaps you should contact one of our sponsors? Or maybe one of us can get it for you and ship it. Shop around for your motorcycle insurance. Most people do not get a multi-vehicle discount by covering their bike on their auto policy, most companies consider it a recreational vehicle. Not only should you get a discount for taking a rider training/safety course but some insurance companies will give a discount for years of experience as well. With those two things plus a motorcycle specific policy you can afford to reduce your deductible to something affordable. I've used Fernet (insurance brokerage) in Florida for about eight years now, they have several different bike and rec vehicle ins. companies they use, find out if your ins agent can get you Dairyland, they are bike friendly. Don't know if they can take care or our Canadian friends though... Sorry for the thread jack Jeff, I hope your knee heals quick. |

I would get with brinnutz he has a link to lakeshore HD that offers 20% off all parts but you have to have th PN#'s. When i ride with just jean's on i have strap on Armour that goes on under the jeans. |

That shifter update does not work with 2000 M2's. I bought one from Buell and I had 2 inches between the shifter and the footpegs, I think it is for X1. Weird. |

Psycrow, Sorry to hear of your fall. Are you still in the in the Hartland area? Must still be tons of snow up there as northern NB was buried again this year. I'm in NS and things are just looking up here now. Had the Harley out this past Saturday but as you found out the roads are terrible with lots of sand/gravel everywhere. There are a few M2 Buells about down this way and the Halifax dealer has two sales guys (XB9 & XB12) and one tech ('02 M2) that are Buell riders plus an 1125 demo if down this way. Ride safe. |

Psycrow, You are going to need the updated shifter kit: 49074-01Y - Fits '97-'02 M2 and S3 models without fairing lowers. I have a PM coming your way btw. |

Here is a couple shots of the shift lever. Could the but of that bolt be "easy outed"? IF so I could clean up the lever, replace the the Rubber Peg and just order the connecting rod, correct? http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu103/SaaKaf/sh ifter1.jpg http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu103/SaaKaf/Sh ifter2.jpg http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu103/SaaKaf/sh ifter3.jpg |

You would be better off just drilling and retap the threads. |

On the other side, mine came out of the brake lever fairly easily. Often I foul up and they don't. THEN I drill them out to retap the threads. Unless I broke the eze out off in there. THEN I go buy a new part. Never use cheap eze outs. |

It's already got a pilot started to drill through the back of it. Use a standard drill and maybe it will even break loose while you are drilling it out. Clean it up with a file and polish. No one will know the difference but us. Did you need both those mirrors? |

no just the Left and its not mangled I could sand it up and repaint so if you want to hang on to it for that rainy day I'll manage. Im 1/2 toying about going with Bar end mirrors since I have to replace one of the bar ends anyways. I know Im going to get answers all over the spectrum here but Ive never been crazy over the Blue and since I have to paint it I was thinking Harley orange (like the new XR1200) but my Wife hates the color so I came across a thread in the XB forum with pics of Flat Black XB's. Any opinions on what that would look line on a Tuber? |

I'm going to eventually paint a spare manta tank I have flat black, along with the flyscreen and 98 tail section. With the orange frame, I think it'll be sick. |

Wow, That's pretty extreme. I have a a Black frame and bare Aluminum wheels. Although the Orange frame would be better I thought the black on black with silver(aluminum) highlights would be nice. Psy |

I just don't get it. Flat black, crude parts, and gas mask just look a bit too contrived, like the Mad Max movie prop. On the other hand, just fixing what is broken so it works again without putting a lot of effort into aesthetics is an honest approach. Flat black primer can be part of that. The scars and scrapes can still show and they tell a (true) story. A well-used bike gets my respect even if it is not a restored showpiece, but I am not so keen on "intentionally distressed" looks. |

Tastefully done, flat colors can look real nice. There's some tank lettering that has a machined metal look to it, flat black with those letters and maybe some bare aluminum barends (I know LP had some plain silver ones). Could look pretty slick I think. Maybe get yourself some of those cnc'd bar end mirrors in plain metal instead of anodized finish? You are still welcome to my spare mirrors though. |

Thanks to everyone who has posted or PM'ed me with help and suggestions, especially Littlebuggles. I think I'm going to do something different with the mirrors ( not sure yet) so just the Handlebars would be awesome! The more I think about it the more I'm liking the flat black idea. I know this autobody guy that owes me a favor so I'll talk to him about spraying flat. Looking over the bike I've discovered I need a front ISO as well so I'm going to commence tear down this Saturday. finally look at the jetting and polish the headers while I'm at it. Hopefully have everything back together and running by the first of May. |
