What is the actual purpose of the chin fairing? Rock protection airflow or just looks? I have an oil cooler line leak and took the fairing off to trace the leak and after taking it off, I like the looks of it and thinking of keeping it off.

It is mainly a styling exercise.

When the X1 debuted with a chin fairing, I believe its chin fairing was Erik's artistic tribute to John Britten's superbike which incorporated a chin fairing as one of the many aerodynamic features that contributed to the success of his radical machine.

Erik Buell and John Britten shared lofty aspirations of producing V-Twin World Beaters.

I did a search for John Britten and I see the chin fairing. On a pink/blue bike. Cool. Thanks

Erik Buell and John Britten shared lofty aspirations of producing V-Twin World Beaters.

And despite the issues I would say that the aspirations were well realised.

I saw a Britten in the museum in Wellington NZ. Radical and incredible.

John Britten is a story in himself

Oil filter access and the chin fairing stayed off my XB12R, too.
Its chin fairing and brackets weigh 2 lbs.

What protects front face of engine absent chin fairing/better?
Once it's messy, that 'front face' will be tough to clean and make all mechanical & 'purty again.

Ideas for better coverage out of replacement front fender or as add-on-to stock XB-R's half fender?

I always assumed that it might make a nice place to hide an oil tank were one to relocate a few of the other, under-slung devices, mass centralization and all that.
