"GGRRRR i hate this updated shifter it is crappy sloppy. I wish i could afford a banke shifter. My 01 x1 supposedly has the upgraded style shifter and if it is the updated one it blows majorly!!
I had a banke, and upgraded to the 01+ shifter. The banke blows imo. It always had a lot of resistance in the movement even after replacing the bearing in it and lots of lubing on all the pivot points.
The 01+ shifter is smooth as silk and CAN be mounted to allow 1-up / 4 down shifting, as opposed to the Banke which can't be mounted for that shift pattern.
I guess everyone has their own preferences. Since this topic came up though, I'll definitely take a closer look at the XR shift linkage next time I'm in a dealer. It looks like the left footpeg is in about the same area as an X1, but the XR linkage is definitely not designed for a chin fairing. |

The Banke set is well worth the money. Save your nickels and dimes and get what you should to begin with! |

I like the foot peg on the XR but that long rod looks a little weak if the ride starts getting heavy footed. I can see it bowing |

I must admit, I've never used the bushing in quite that manner. Perhaps the lubricant you are using is causing it to deteriorate.
it was worn out when i bought it,i know it just needs a new bushing, but for 35 bucks a set i might as well double that and get a whole new shifter |

This is what I did to cure the slop in mine.
I really wanted to keep the shifter arms 'cause they look so cool and I didn't have the $$ for Banke ,so this what I came up with.
It's so much better then the stock "over" set up, like night & day. |

so did you make that style shifter out of the boomerang? what parts did you need to connect the shift lever to the bike in that new location? |

I chopped the boomerang and used the longer half then got a bushing to use on the case bolt with a machined spacer similar the Banke spacer that goes under the chin. Using an X-1 shift shaft attachment and an XB shift rod that's bolted to the boomerang. Then a German helmet spike as the toe peg that I barely had enough room for the bolt hole to be drilled. It's a pain in the ass to swap those out with spacers for "safer" pegs during track days. |

I saw it too and I agree. I still prefer the boomerang with the bronze bushing any day of the week. |

Ok here's the close ups of my set up. I don't really have a parts list since the only "shelf parts" are the XB shift rod and a newer X-1 shift shaft bracket since the rod attachment area allowed me to drill for a bigger bolt. I've snapped a couple of the small ones over the years and have had to ride home through hill country with just 4th gear.....not cool.

so do you get a shorter throw when you shift gears now? i guess with the shorter arm on the shifter shaft that it has to effect the travel and make the shift lever travel shorter? |

No ,I wouldn't say so since the shaft still has to rotate the same amount to engage the gears. |

Nice.
I guess the important thing to look at for length of throw vs. effort is the ratio of the lengths of the two lever arms?

Yes, The difference from the "over" set up to this was almost like getting on a jap bike or at least a european one as far as slop ,easier throw and smoothness of engagement. |

Pretty sure Tom,I just don't remember which p# or year model. I believe there were 2 or 3 different designs with just subtle changes to dimensions and looks. |

Guys trust me on this...If you are replacing the boomerang set up just because of the excessive slop and play in the lever, Al's bronze bushing eliminates the play basically 100%. Now if don't like the way the thing looks, then that is a different story... |

Here's what I did to turn the Boomerang into a sweet shifter...Installed a 'wave washer' between the Boomerang and the and the frame. The shaft is ~ 0.635 in. OD, the wave washer is ~ 0.650 ID, and is 0.050 thick steel. The only caution is when you are tightening up the peg retaining bolt, you don't pinch the washer on the rotational positioning flats.
It removes the vibration from the boomerang, but does not restrict its movement when shifting. It works nicely, no missed shifts, and one less thing vibrating. I have had it on for several thousand miles, and no complaints at all!
The wave washer came from Lowes. |
