Aren't all diesels direct injection?
All that I know of.

I always liked the 2 cycle bikes I've owned,great power per weight. Fuel economy not that great.
With direct fuel injection and the other mods I proposed, I think power and economy could be much better. (with better emissions)

The problem with conventional 2 strokes was that part of the fuel air and oil charge that lubricated the engine was drawn out the exhaust when the exhaust sequence occurred. The direct injection 2 strokes only have air coming into the engine and the fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber, that way when the exhaust sequence occurrs nothing but exhaust and excess air goes out the exhaust, almost like a AIR pump of the 70s emission systems, plus any unburned fuel would have the chance to burn completely and the next VE charge would be all air with out the problem of having unburned fuel leaving the combustion chamber. A double plus...fully charged cylinder, no worry of spilling fuel mixture out the exhaust....what a deal!
Oiling can be controlled with sealed bearings lubed by a continous oil bath and a very small oil spray on the piston.

And that is apparently how it's being done in these motors. However, simple as it is to say, the actual engineering appears to be very difficult judging by the number of failed previous efforts by others.

Regarding 2 strokes running backwards, I was talking to a guy at Daytona years ago with a hotrodded RD350. He said his aftermarket ignition somehow made starting backwards easier than stock, even though the kicker made it go forwards. Until he learned to ID the flatter engine sound, he was real careful letting out the clutch.

I once let a buddy ride my DT1 (Yamaha 250 enduro) while we were hill climbing...he stalled it out short of the top...let it roll back down the hill backwards...popped the clutch while it was moving backwatds...it cranked...he held the clutch in....backed on down the hill....revved 'er up...popped the clutch and promptly sailed over the bars as the bike took off backwards....I never laughed so hard in my life...my buddy was known as "wrongway murphy" for years after that...bent the bars and tore the seat...but it was worth it just to see it happen.

Rfischer - the press release in this thread is for a 4 stroke motor, not a 2 stroke. Is this a different motor than you are talking about?
I see the 09 sled specs list a 600cc 2 stroke E-TEC that is described as DI, but there is no other info on this engine on the website (BRP), just the Evenrude version and the SDI that has been around for a while.

All diesels have fuel injected into the cylinder head. Older designs, especially in light vehicles, sometimes used IDI (indirect injection), which just meant that there was a small "pre-chamber" connected to the combustion chamber. This allowed for better cold starts, and reduced knocking noise, before direct injection and common rail fuels systems became standard issue on light and heavy duty diesels.

Yes. The link in this thread from "Husky" is for the new 1200cc 4-stroke. The motors I'm referring to are new Direct Injection 2-strokes. You'll find the 600cc discussed at the Ski-Doo web site. The 800cc. isn't up yet, but is discussed in at least one recent automotive publication [Winding Road] that has a lead article on Direct Injection. They use Ski-Doo and Porsche in the article.
