I don't know if this has been discussed yet but I'm a noob on this board so don't tar and feather me. I just recently picked up a 2006 Uly with 7k miles on it. Love the bike and all has been well except this morning on my way to work, I noticed my lights would kinda of dim out on me. This was going down the interstate 70-75 mph. They would go dim and then brighten back up, this happened 3-4 times that I noticed. Any suggestions?

06 and 07 Ulysses have issues with the charging system. Sounds like yours is on the way out. Do a search on here for the 77 connector, take it apart and see if its melted. If so, it is covered under warranty.

Dirty, You need a service manual. If you need tarred or feathered, click on topics then backfire board. The people with a lot of patience are on the BB&D. They will let you ask the same question over and over. Personally I think it is cause they are old and senile and can't remember answering the same question the day before. Lot of nice knowledgeable Buellers here.

Yeah I need a service manual but this is my first Buell and out of 20+ bikes, this is also the first bike where the lights start dimming on me going down the road. This is my only means of transportation and can't have it leave me stranded. I just don't have a clue what to look for.

Is there any downside to doing away with the connector altogether and just splicing the wires together? Outside of being able to conveniently disconnect the VR from the Battery, is there any reason not to do away with the suspect plug?

Don't neglect the obvious either: loose or dirty connection at the battery.

Just something else to consider.

Charge the batt. Check the voltage with engine off. (across the terminals) Should be over 12. Check the voltage at idle. Should be more. Rev it a bit and the voltage should go up to 13.8 or so. If all this checks out, your batt is getting tired and needs replaced. If not, take a close look at that 77 conn. There was a recent thread on it that was supurb. If it checks out, check vr and stator as described in the service manual that you do not have. (Sorry about that last bit.) Research threads on the subject. It's here somewhere.

Dirty, the only downside to doing away with the 77 connector would be a little more work to replace a voltage regulator. The upside of the connector never melting again is more than worth it. I used submersible well pump splices that are watertight. 2 splices at hardware store $20, never dealing with the 77 connector again priceless.

Some of the bikes had a simpler problem. The ground wires on the steering head, behind the headlights, can break off. Mine had the throttle cables going through the wires where they joined at the ground bolt.

When the lights started flashing dim, but the bike ran fine otherwise, it was a good place to start.

Ray, has some old fart on BB&D touched your special place?

Thanks guys for the tips. I have all weekend so I am going to dig around until I can find out what it is. On the lighter side of things, I just got back from having my new exhaust put on and boy, am I in love. The Uly with a proper exhaust is what a real motorcycle sounds like.

Update.

I checked my ground connections and made sure my battery cables were tight this weekend. This afternoon I checked the 77 connector plug and sure enough, there was a hint of deformation on one side of it. I snipped it off and spliced it up. Hopefully there will be no more dimming of the lights. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions guys.

If that didn't do it check your cables again as some of the bolts would bottom out in the battery and feel tight but the cable was still loose. If this is the case just add a washer and retighten. Hopefully you already found it.
