I got laid off yesterday afternoon. It wasn't unexpected, and I wanted to see it happen, yet I feel kinda screwed up. The job had been one of the best jobs I'd ever had, but there was a major management change, and it became a nightmare. Hundreds of people had been let go over the past few months, and the people left were always looking over their shoulders. We all felt like Jews living in Nazi Germany, just waiting to be "collected". When my boss told me I was getting the ax, I thanked him; which really puzzled him. He couldn't grasp that I wasn't sad. Today, I've got a real mixed bag of emotions running wild in my head. I'm glad that the job is over, and I know that I'll find another job that I'll enjoy, but I still feel screwed up. For years I was a Sandhog, and Layoffs were common and a regular occurrence, and they seldom bothered me. This one's a little tougher. Maybe because the job had been so good. I know that others here have been through job changes and they'll understand what's going through my head. Thanks for letting me vent. | ||

Good luck finding another... We had a major management change here a few years ago as well and this guy is just plain out for himself. All the positions that have opened up so far have gone to friends of his so no-one gets any advancement at all... I wouldn't mind too much if I was a minimum wage worker, but when your talking about jobs that pay $21 an hour it's hard to see someone from outside with no experience come in and sit on their ass and prompt the boss to walk in and ask the rest of us what OUR problems are... Anyway, don't rest, get out there ASAP. | ||

About four or five years ago. I went to work one morning, only to find a note on the door telling us where we could pick up our final paycheck. I was bummed, but after all was said and done it was just the kick in the pants I needed to move onward and upward. Best of luck. At the very least you seem to have the right attitude. Sorry to hear it Crust, I can relate, however, I've been "furloughed" since 10/31/03 and have to go 2000 miles to go to work tomorrow- for who knows how long. Head south or west with that Buell and enjoy the freedom to ride as long as you want while you can! | ||

I understand completely. But don't loaf, get back out there. I'm expecting my departure notice any month now and see my potential replacement getting groomed for the part. I doubt very much I'll be here in June, if so I'll be very surprised. Life goes on Crusty, so make a sandwich out of that loaf. A better opportunity is probably just waiting for your availability. And those little machined/lathed drain plugs would maybe be a good thing to keep in your pocket when asked in an interview to tell about something you feel good about doing. Thanks again for that, would make for a good story, shows a good heart as well as a good talent.  | ||

I know that others here have been through job changes and they'll understand what's going through my head. When I lived in Arkansas I worked for General Dynamics and during the defense slump they closed the plant down, 1,500 people in a town of 15,000 out of work !! It was hard and yes emotions are very mixed, your job is a big part of your life !! But there is life after that and it does get better !! One day you will be happy about how the change will affect your life in a good way, after the initial heartbreak !! Hang in there Crusty !!!! CJ  | ||

know that others here have been through job changes and they'll understand what's going through my head. When I lost my job 2 years ago after 14 years with the company, I know exactly how you feel. I was bummed, but after all was said and done it was just the kick in the pants I needed to move onward and upward I think thats true for a lot of us, we become complacent & even though we arent real happy in our present situation, we dont have the balls to simply quit & do something about it. My old job was 35 miles from home & the bosses there were tyrants, but I was used to it..hated it but used to it. My job now is 8 miles from home & we just had a slight managment shakeup that improved a good job into a great job. Always light at the end of the tunnel Crusty. I was confident in my abilities & never turned in 1 application. Went to monster.com filled out the resume & literally had 2 dozen different offers within a matter of a few weeks. | ||

Hey Crusty, I've been there a few times too & I've always found that as one door closes another one opens. So don't let it get you down, look on it as an opportunity to do something else or whatever. And if you feel like a European holiday theres a few folks over this side of the pond would be happy to lend a bed & a map, after all you can't say you haven't got the time.  | ||

Crusty, I know what you mean about mixed emotions. I just got opposite news at my job today. I have been working part-time (25 hours a week) since August and today I was called into my boss's office and I thought I was going to be let go but I am going back to full-time! I will be making more but not what I used to, although I will have full benefits back as of Feb. 1. I should be happy about it and I am...sort of. I wonder if it isn't just delaying the inevitable. The company is still on very shaky ground. Anyway, good luck in your search for another job! I know for sure that I will still be looking. | ||

Thanks, everybody for the support. As I said, the layoff wasn't unexpected, and I have a fairly solid plan of attack for finding a new job. I just needed to vent out some of the feelings of anger and frustration. It had been maybe the best and most enjoyable job I'd held in a lot of years, and to watch it all go away was tough. It's time for a new challenge, and it should be fun and exciting. | ||

my wife found a job on newenglandemployer.com, i don't know if you've already tried that or not, but if you're willing to relocate i'll keep my ears open for you down this way, there's a lot of job opportunities in the cape. good luck crusty! |
