how much engine mods can the DDFI and injectors handle? is 88" with stage 3 heads and maybe .575" cams out of reach with the DDFI and stock injectors? or is the 1250 with mild headwork as far as you can go? i can get the 88" kit from my machine shop for under $1000, but he has no idea what the limits of the ECM,DDFI, and injectors are, and was talking about lots of discovery time on the dyno. |

88" stage 3 and tall cams, Time for a carb..... or an aftermarket efi system. ecm spy will allow resetting of the map values but its dyno time as you say. |

The stock system can handle much more than most people think (at least if one knows what he does). 88" is not really a problem. |

i read somewhere of an X1 that had a 88ci kit, stage 3 heads, red shift 585s, a ported stock throttle body, bigger injectors that were stock on another harley or buell (i think it was a v-rod?) and was able to have the factory ecm remapped easily with room to spare... keep in mind though... carb CAN be cheaper if done right... and easier to tune in your garage instead of on a dyno like with EFI. Like oldog said, that big and a carb becomes the better route for many reasons... I would try to stick with EFI as much as possible if it were me... but then again, I would advise others to do the carb swap and be done with it. did i hear right that the injectors in our bikes are ford models? if so cant we get bigger injectors, or wont ecm spy calibrate things like that? i have to get ahold of a shop in the pittsburgh area by the name of sampson racing, heard they build and tune some serious buells |

Olddog- i took the engine back out this weekend, replaced front and rear isolators and just used the front tie bar for a quick eyeball. re-adjuted the rest of the tie bars starting from the front and put them on so they fit without a bind. ive got the rear wheel out .018" at the swing arm adjusters and the thing is within the width of my string i was using for the alignment, maybe .025-.030".i need to do the tps thing and i will be on the road. |

I was going to wait until I was done tuning but this post has forced my hand. While it is true that for many years a carb was the way to go because of the primitive nature of our beloved bikes archaic fuel injection this is no longer true. The fuel injection on the early Buell's can be made to work with just about any engine combination. I just put my 11:1 1250, 585 Redshift, stage 3 heads by NRHS X1 back together and can tell you that the stock injection can definitely be made to work...BUT you will have to either datalog or dyno the bike with ECMSpy and a datalogging system. I've got a total of about 200.00 in my setup (not including injectors). I also know of an 88" XB built and tuned by Terry Reed racing in Columbus, a 90" XB in Australia and a really hot 12:1 1200 XB in Ohio that all ran the stock injection system with or without the stock injectors. I have found an aftermarket set of injectors that are a direct replacement for the stock injectors and can flow substantially more fuel than stock but you won't need them unless you are building an 88/90". Any 1250 can run the stock injectors. The idea of a carb is totally unnecessary. I can tune my bike far better than anyone could tune a carb for my bike. The datalogging/dyno tune makes it possible to make more small corrections than you can make with jets and an air/fuel screw. If any of you want to talk to me about this send me an email and I'll give you all the details. Ride safe, Frank. |
