Hahahahaha. . . I trained in a Traumahawk (I''ve never heard that, but love that name) and it was interesting. I'm not one of the natural born aviators . . . and as I read about the spin characteristics of the plane I got sweaty palms. I read the part about imminent stalls and instead of using words like "release back pressure on the yoke" I read it as "shove the yoke to the panel vigorously" . . . You'd know better than I . . . and I'm sure it was only about 20 degrees nose down, but in my mind I was plummeting to earth. The Warrior, I flew 8939F quite a bit, was a wonderfully forgiving plane with it's nearly impossible to stall wing with the twist at the root. Either would be a blast . . . I may have to update my medical! |

Okay...all of this talk has prompted me to get off my ass. I just got off the phone with the Warrior guy. He is in fact interested in renting to me. It's tied down at FRG. I know that's not the most convenient to you and me but it's where I learned to fly and it's where I'm most comfortable from an airspace perspective. I'll keep you posted! Tipsy PS - I used to give initial CFI instruction in Traumhawk's. They do have a bad reputation when it comes to spins but I found as long as you respected the CG envelope and used textbook recovery procedure (PARE) it would fly out of the spin quite well. The empennage however did twist around pretty dramatically (Message edited by tipsymcstagger on February 01, 2009) |

Is there anything other than medical I need to get up to date? I have my license and (not sure they even use it anymore) radio license. I also think I need to get up on the changed airspace rules/regs/etc since I was flying. Where's a good place to pick up refresher books and sectionals? Sporty's still around? |

You need a 3rd class medical. No need for a personal radio license when operating domestically. Sporty's is definitely still around. Believe me, I'm getting up to speed on all of the VFR stuff too. I've been flying IFR for the last 8000 hours so the onus is always on ATC. I bought the ASA Guide to the Flight Review as a start but my recommendation is to review the AIM and join/renew with AOPA. It's good to read their magazine and to have access to all of their online resources. Plus, they have a forum that is 99% GA. The biggest change since 9/11 is the TFR. These are Temporary Flight Restrictions that can pop up anywhere. It's the PIC's responsibility to know about and avoid them. The better portable GPS units with XM downlink capability can depict TFR's real time. Of course, I don't currently own one of these Tipsy (Message edited by tipsymcstagger on February 01, 2009) |

Darnitall . . we really need another hobby? That's a great link to get started. By the way...not sure how long since you've been current...but there's been a big shift toward ICAO so all of the airspace is now A, B,C D,E & G. This is a bit older, but looks like a good summary. Also, the weather format is METAR and TAF. Tipsy |

It figures Wedco is sold out of those 10 litre old style cans. Two of them would've been nice, I'll have to check Ebay. |

All this A/C talk reminds me of my youth...First flight in a light aircraft was a Warrior. My Dad and I took lessons out in Brookhaven in 150's and 152's. I soloed in Dec of 87 at 17. Was able to fly a plane by myself, but not legally allowed to drive a car to get to the plane...Gave up flying to go to Embry Riddle and pursue my love of mechanical drawing and aircraft. Long story short...left E.R. early, worked for a now defunct airline, but now employed by a rail road. Was a fun time... VFR and unicom at Brookhaven at the time, no touch and go's allowed...Remember using landmarks that are now gone, to turn base, final etc...ah the good old days... |

My first "paying" job (in airplanes) was towing banners and flying Shadow Traffic out of Brookhaven Tipsy |
