I am the new proud owner of a 99 X1, it has a drop in K and N, a Super Trapp slip on and a power commander that was never installed new in the box. I was wondering if there was any inexpensive mods i could do to the bike.
First off is the "bread box" I looked into a Forcewinder but they seem pretty expensive. Is there any thing else I can do to ditch that bulky box?
And the second is there inexpensive way to get ride of the clunky license plate holder, has any one chopped theres by them selves and was it hard to do?
Thanks, Jay

The "bread box" on the right an the scoop on the left are OEM slow speed frame sliders.

Congrats on your new X1. DJ Kaplan had a thread where he made a small license plate bracket, try a search. You will probably have to relocate your rear turn signals.

My advice if you are looking to modify things and don't have much money is save your money for the recalls that haven't yet been done.

That would be Joanne

Roflamo!

I would go through the bike, and inspect various wear items and the recall stuff,
taking care of the needed items.

I would ditch the PC and get an ECM spy cable from American Sport Bike ( and a copy of ecm spy )
a laptop is handy for this.

2 mods I would do you cant see, remove the spring plate in the clutch and replace it with 2 steel and one fiber plate.

I would get the updated rocker box gasket kit, a gear case gasket [correct for the year! ] and bronze oil pump drive gear, assuming that no other problems exist the motor is now bullet proof,

mods I did
tail clean up, by plating the tail and then making a steel licence plate bracket, you need an M2 tail light lens. plan on fiddling with the light housing as the plate mount spaces it out.

Other alterations,
billet dash, oil pressure and temp gauges
True HID headlight
CF fly screen,
Clear coated the PM wheels ( not recomended ) =(
cf tank cover and chin faring, force winder, billit catch can, gps power take off, ram mount, tank trim ( removed scoop and air box )
melinium screens, pegasus derby, factory custom seat, aftermarket ignition switch, remove sidestand switch, I have a race ecm but it runs too rich.

ditch the stock air box it lets dirt in, the force winder and a K&N at least keep }crap outa the motor, skip the force aluminum breather bolts, get some banjo bolts OR do the XB rocker box mod.

updated Supertrap slipon ( the 90 elbow is part of the unit) if yours is not pay close attention to the front of the muffler as if it fails you may "polevault" if you have the recipts and are the original purchaser contact supertrap.

a works perf or penski shock is a good investment if you plan on keeping the bike, the showa WILL fail I'm on my second one.

WELCOME TO THE MADNESS!

I'm about to decide to stop smoking, just to save money and put it into this damn bike instead.

This whole X1 deal is addicting..

My personal advice for the "breadbox" is to keep it. I swapped mine for a forcewinder but would keep the stock airbox if I had it to do over again.

As for the rear fender.. I think the best looking way to replace it is a carbon fiber undertail from American Sport Bike.

You can also remove the rear hugger fender (that wraps around next to the tire) for better looks, but the tire will sling water onto your back when the roads are wet. Don't ask how the water travels around the subframe onto your back.. I've been wondering that since I took the hugger off.

If you are on a tight budget, then I would start with seeing what you need now. Any oil leaks or seepage, drivability problems, etc?
You can wait until the rocker boxes leak to replace the gaskets, because there is a good chance that they have been replaced by now. If you drive the bike hard, I would replace the primary chain tensioner with a new style one, assuming again that it hasn't been done already.

I would positively not use the Power Commander, as Oldog said before. Get a cable and use the ECMSPY program, available for no cost, to adjust the ECM and to set the TPS. You will need to do this, and will be amazed to see how much better the bike will run. The TPS reset should be considered a mandatory maintenance item, and you will save money over the dealer cost to do this the first time you use it.

Keep the breadbox, the looks will kinda grow on you!

I like Formula + for the tranny, 20W50 Synthetic oil for the engine.

Lube the cables, tighten the battery and ground connections, keep the belt adjusted loose, not the factory spec.

Best wishes, Jim

First thing to do Jayson, is to throw away or sell the power comander!
Then set up your favorite lap-top with ECM-spy and a cable to communicate with your race ECM.
DON'T eliminate the air duct and intake pods, you can do some interior work without losing them. It's like taking the boobs off your girl...she'll never look the same.
Collect more money, your gonna need it!

Pkforbes87 - Roll your own. Saves money. : )

Jay,
Welcome to the party.
I have an '02 X1W that I've been doing things to for a while. Sucks you in. I'm by no means a Buell expert, but there's plenty of them here.

While the Carbon Fiber Underseat Panel is an option, I ripped all that plastic junk out from under mine and created my own underseat out of sheet metal. It's not exactly finished and some people call it hacker, but it made a huge difference in the looks of the bike.

we were somewhere around barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold

I sported the bread boxes for 20,000 miles... They never grew on me. haha. just my opinion. I opted for the American Sport Bike Race Oval Intake, which I'm quite happy with. As mentioned, you'll have to use banjo bolts and re-route your oil breather tube. Keep in mind that when you take off the bread boxes the tank cover is exposed along the bottom and doesn't look very good (opinion). The Tank Accents are pricey, depending on your budget, but they make it look really nice.

I recommend the Race ECM although I've never dealt with the power commander.

One thing I'd suggest is to do any intake, exhaust, ECM changes all at once unless you have a way of easily resetting the TPS.

Try the Traction Grips. They are great.
You can also throw on some XBs bars. They're usually cheap on ebay. They lower the bars something like 2 inches and move them back one inch or so. Gives you a little bit more of an aggressive riding position without all the wrist strain of clip ons. All of my controls clear my tank turning lock to lock, too. I saw a guy with Pro-Tapers on his X1 and he couldn't turn the bars very far at all. Kept beeping the horn when trying to back his bike into a parking stall. haha.

Cheers,
Grant
