I went to the IMS in Cleveland yesterday and came across a "older" racer. We got to talking about Nelson Ledges and he had run the 24 hour race back in the day. Listening to how treacherous night racing could be took on new meaning for me. Things I never thought about.... worms.... FROGS!! Nelson is built on some swampy stuff and he said late at night the worms and frogs would get on the track. He said you could get a real good "pucker factor" going on when you hit a bunch of worms or a frogs at speed.... I was laughing so hard he had me in tears! I did a search and found this article.... I would love to try it once... http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2004/jul/onthisweek 10.htm |

That would have been something I would have been interested in doing. Glad to see that you got to meet one of the participants. The last one was in 1993, you suppose they will bring it back someday? |

The rumor was that the frogs would hop out onto the track, and sit in the middle of the "the line" in corners, since the pavement was warm there. My dad told me (and my mom) that he hit a frog there during a qualifier endurance race for the 24 hour, a four-hour endurance race that started around dusk. A few years ago he told me the truth: he had a rider balking him in corners, and when he finally got past he gave him the bird, then crashed in one-handed style. Karma's a bitch, no? |
