I assume the min is 91 octane? What would be the optimal octane for this motor? |

The owner's manual specifies "91 pump octane (R+M)/2." At higher elevations like in Denver and such, you won't need more than 89. Owner's manual octane specification |

OK, how about the other side of this question: the manual says not to use octane boosters. But the service guy at the HD shop says it's OK to use this stuff they sell called "Liquid Horsepower." It advertises itself as both an octane booster and a stabilizer --- and the manual says you can use a stabilizer if the bike is to be stored. I'm skeptical, and haven't used it in my 1125. Anyone have any actual knowledge on this topic? |

ooooo, liquid horsepower... I haven't been able to find that around here in well over a year, it used to work great in old M2. I haven't had the chance to try it in my 1125R, but I would definitely swear by it on my old bike. |

I run 91 all the time. Here in ND and when I went out to UT. Noticed a slight drop in HP/pick up in UT, but no other changes. |

91-94 is what I run, depending on what is offered wherever I'm stopping. I'd steer clear of lower octanes for a high compression, high output engine like this one. |

unless u can increase the timing, increasing the octane isnt goin to help give yah more power. 91 is all it needs to run the way it needs to with out detenation. |

Agreed, Jmr1283. To clarify my post, I buy the "good stuff", which varies by station. Anything 91+ is okay by me... |

The compression for this bike is 11.5:1 correct? It just seems like you would need 93 for consistent performance. Hopefully in another few years I'll buy an 1125, but the best I can get in Cali is 91 unless I go out of my way and buy some race fuel. |

Does anyone know if the 1125 pulls timing with 91? If so, how much? My buddies' Husqvarna has a 13:1 CR and his ECU pulls 5 degrees when using 91. His manual says to run 95, but he's SOL on getting any. (Message edited by boltrider on January 25, 2009) |

???? How does the bike know the octane? Cars use the knock sensor and retard accordingly, but I don't think the 11's ECM does this. It doesn't have a knock sensor, but does monitor engine "Phase", which I believe, relates to load. |

his ecm pulls timing probably because of a knock sensor is picking up detenation. It couldnt tell what octane it is. well it could but no vehicles i know of have anything cabable of telling the octane of the gas ur using. the 1125r doesnt pull timing out for 91. thats what they want u to use. so when they designed the motor they said okay whats the save octane for this compression ratio. heads design, pistons. also intake. ive put 86 in mine a couple times. i havent had any knockin but i wasnt extremely hard on it when it did have it in it. |

This system runs a LOT of advance. Idle is betw/ 12-17 degrees advance. WFO at mid-range rpm is near max of 63.5 degrees advance. I used BDFI-III to drop my idle advance to 5.5 degrees below 2200 rpm. Sounds deeper and smoother and idles a little cooler. Z |

BTW - a VERY good reason to wait to ride until the temp quits flashing - At 151+ degrees F Engine temp(Operating Temp), the fuel and spark maps change. Monitoring Loretta on start-up, she runs 15-16 degrees advance until OT is reached, then drops to 5.5. Z (Message edited by zac4mac on January 25, 2009) |
