I have a 96 S2 that had a new battery this fall, I washed it in late november, while it was still above freezing, 39 degrees I think. Well what happened was that when I was done I wheeled it into the garage and put it on its side stand. About 2 minutes later I could hear this horrible shorting sound coming from in front of or behind the base of the battery. To be honest, I turned my head and ran, as it sounded like it was going to go up. When it was done, I let it sit for a while and took the battery out. I got my Battery Tender back from a friend and have it on the charger and it is yellow flashing green, so it may be salvageable. But my real question is what caused the problem in the first place? Was it a relay or? Anyone have any suggestions? | ||

You have a couple of circuit breakers behind the battery. You may want to check each one while you have the battery out. I'm not sure how you could "short" one out with water, these bikes are designed to ride in the ride and should be able to withstand a decent amount of water getting everywhere. Good luck! | ||

Thanks for the info Bartimus. I charged the battery and cleaned the terminals of the Starter Relay and she started up. The bike ran great without any problems so I still don't know what caused the rapid discharge of the battery, hope to figure that out by this summer. But thanks for responding and here is a pic of this afternoon's labors. | ||

II there was some road salt in the bike, the water could have been electrolyzing. That wouldn't have made any real sounds though. Weird. Just weird. Try again with a squirt bottle, being careful and systematic about what you wet down? Or perhaps just ride it and pretend you never noticed the sound  | ||
