That would make them early models since the sensor was re-located in 2k. Nasty gooey oil is another sign of a reason the valve guide was dry and tight when the bike was started and revved cold. |

I used an air chisel for a locking tool. It took a little effort to make things line up, but if you want to go cheap you may be able to find something in the garage that will work just fine. You're making great progress. I've been letting two bolts hold me up for two weeks! |

Just ordered a primary locking bar, clutch compressor, and '02 X1 parts book from American Sport Bike. I should have an '02 service manual on the way as well. I'm pretty lost at this point. The motor needs to be dropped and the cases split to be cleaned out, but even after reading my '00 manual I'm not very clear on how to do that. There are a lot of oil lines and sensor wires with no visible way to disconnect them. They all lead to a giant clusterf?#$ of cables back by the starter. Maybe after I get those tools, and pull the clutch out I can pull the starter and actually see what's going on down there. I really should find a better way of lifting this bike too. As of this morning the pegs are off so the center stand is no longer being used. The rear end is hanging from a stepladder via a tie-down strap. Anyone got some ideas for a more secure way of hanging this bike? |

Pk that ladder sounds good for a rear stand, tape and tag the cables as you remove them, the starter alternator and regulator cables, the timing sensor cables clutch and throttle, tag and tie back same with the hoses, the FSM is well written on the tear down and inspection of the engine, there are a couple of steps that may require a judgment call the lapping of the bearing race/ shimming end play setting If it were My bike and money Hose is cheap the oil bag would come out and be cleaned and checked the hose replaced make a sketch and use the old ones to cut the new ones. with the money you are going to spend take your time don't cut corners, If your building a hot rod consider keeping them both In my limited experience the hotter you go the quicker it'll blow after droping several large in a motor a dyno tune is a good investment there is a PDF floating around about using ECM spy its easy and works well |

From recent experience, one strap in back and a tire at the front is a little unstable. Make sure you have help, or a very good support for the engine once everything is disconnected. |

Dropped the motor tonight alone, with nothing more than a floor jack and a strap. I was having a blonde moment with the starter. I thought I'd have to pull the clutch out to make room for one of the starter bolts to come out. Finally it donned on me to pull the starter out backwards as the bolts were loosened. (DUH) Getting the starter pulled off, and a quick trip to wally world for some better shop lights made finding and disconnecting everything a whole lot easier. Gonna try to pull the swingarm and mounting block next. I'd like to get them both either polished or powdercoated. There's no way I'm gonna put this much work into the bike and leave it looking stock.

Yeah! Just got thunderstorm heads and pistons from a '99 M2 w/ 2000 miles. Cost me less than ONE cylinder, piston, and head new from the dealer. Would XB9 cylinders work with my stock case, pistons, and heads? XB9 Cylinders |

I once flushed out a bottom end without ever spliting the cases. It's jest a small little cavady any how. I fliped the motor upside down, suspended in mid air with straps. I put a large catch bason under it filled it with a few quarts of solvent. covered it with screen to catct the shrapmetal. I used a pump that runs off a drill, fabed up a cleaning wand and comenced to flushing. worked for me. motor ran jest fine. |

So far I've got an NRHS billet motor mount, new motor mount bolts, American Sport Bike upgraded oil pump drive gear. Waiting on stock Thunderstorm heads, new head bolts, NRHS 1250 cylinders, 10.5:1 hurricane pistons, hurricane oil filter, Iridium plugs, stock pushrods. I'm gonna avoid the temptation to upgrade the cams and get any head porting done. I'm running out of room in the budget, and don't really trust myself to tune properly after upgrades like that. Oh yeah, almost forgot XB rocker boxes Should have all the parts by the middle of next week. Patience is a virtue.. Patience is a virtue.. (Message edited by pkforbes87 on January 29, 2009) |

PK do you know the number of the pistons you ordered? I need to get in gear and get mine, I've got the cylinders but need to research the pistons. That list they have is daunting. It sounds like we're building the same motor but I'm sure you'll be done before I am. |

Don't know the number offhand. I think the 1250 is a 3 9/16 bore. I just talked to dan and told him I needed cylinders and pistons to fit stock cases and t-storm heads. Give him a call, I'm sure he can point you in the right direction. |

Thanks, do you know or are you going to have to split the cases? I initially thought mine was a bad oil pump drive gear but now that I've torn down everything 'cept the bottom end I'm going to have to split them. Everything I've taken apart has looked good but there's still shrapnel in the bottom. |

I don't THINK anything is wrong inside the cases other than shrapnel throughout. I was worried about the rods but they both FEEL normal. I'm far from experienced in the area, so I took the cases to a local shop and they're going through everything in the bottom end for me as well as polishing the cases and covers I tried doing it myself, but the nuts holding the mainshaft(?) and countershaft(?) are very tight, and I was getting nowhere with those efforts. The shaft that the primary chain runs off of, and runs to? I think those are the mainshaft and countershaft. Oh well, that's why I took it to someone else. If I don't know what the name of the parts are then I probably shouldn't be doing the work. The mechanic seems like a good guy, I'll ask him to point out what all he is looking for, and hopefully learn something that way without the risk of ruining something doing it myself. @ Kyrocket - Application: Buell t-storm 15º dome Bore: 3.563 Stroke: 3.813 Compression: 10.5:1 Kit: 002-P3563TS-DK - $309.95 *Includes full set of pistons, wrist pins, circlips, rings (Message edited by pkforbes87 on January 29, 2009) |

Betty is slowly seeing some progress.. and parts are starting to arrive!
I messed up and only ordered one turret valve. ..guess I can start polishing while I wait for another one to arrive. |

The xb9 cylinders should work. I believe the difference between the 9 and the 12 is stroke (on the sportsters it was bore). You do get better finning, but may have to grind in a few places for your carb or injection. |

While waiting on parts I've just been thoroughly cleaning the frame, and running some wiring for the LED kit.
The 1250 kit came today!
..and top end gaskets..
..and a real shiny oil filter!
Pushrods got delivered last week, so now I'm just waiting on heads. |

I got heads today!
Nothing is broken.. it's so beautiful
I didn't stop to think that heads from a '99 M2 would have the head temp sensor next to the plug instead of in the center of the head. Would it be worth my time to work on the original '02 X1 rear head in order to have the updated HTS location?
Oh and another probably stupid question. Is there any reason I shouldn't hit the head fins with a dremel so they match the highlighted cylinder fins? (Message edited by pkforbes87 on February 06, 2009) |

PK, Thats great your upgrading your X-1 motor. Mine has almost 30,000 and I am thinking in the future to do similar hot-rodding. I will keep following your posts. Would you mind at some point listing out all the parts and costs at some point when its done? Thanks, and good luck with your rebuild! Christian |

The man in brown brought me a gift
I always assumed these were aluminum.. I think it's stainless!? AWESOME. Christian - I'll compile a list of parts and resources when I'm done with the project. Right now receipts are scattered in various boxes in the garage. |

Yesterday I started scuffing paint off the head fins so they match the 1250 cylinders. It took about eight hours of hand sanding, and a dremel for the hard to reach spots.
They aren't quite perfect, but the cylinder highlights aren't perfect either and I'd prefer to leave them with some "character" rather than sand off more fin material. SS Brake lines, Lyndall gold pads, SS frame plugs, chrome kick stand spring, billet pushrod bases, and an oil pump gasket are on the way from American Sport Bike. I'm still just waiting on the swingarm and mounting block to be polished before reassembly begins. |
