Back when I was in high school there was a lot of farm/country roads to ride around north of Dallas. One day I was riding my dad’s lowrider way out north almost to Oklahoma when I saw an old man out in a field in front of a barn working on about 4 late model dodge pickups, all white. But then I noticed the 1970 single cab short bed C10 in the barn right behind him. I pulled in and asked if any of his vehicles were for sale, he said no, so I proceeded to ask about the Chevy pickup. He laughed and showed it to me but said “no one will buy it cause it don't run”. One thing led to another and I worked up a deal that if I could get it running before sun down he would sell it to me for good price. Being 18 and in desperate need for a great classic to restore I started wrenching and to OUR surprise the thing fired up after some fresh gas and a good charge on an old battery he had sitting around! We both laughed and high fived. She idled terribly but I was expecting that with the old carb. This think was sweet! Originally black with black interior, and the only options this thing had was a 396 big block (402ci for us that KNOW), Muncie 4-speed and 3.73 posi rear... ALL ORIGINAL FROM THE FACTORY! This thing had never been touched! bought new, driven, and then put out in the barn for the next 30 years. Then came the REAL shocking part... he turned to me and said if I went and snagged 700 cash he would give me the keys and title... ... ... HOLY HELL! I had never ridden so hard and fast back to Dallas to grab some cash, LOL. The next day I had $700 bucks in hand and went to the old mans door at around 8am. He opened it up and with a sad face told me that his neighbor had over heard the truck running, came over earlier this morning and had $5000 cash in hand... an offer he couldn't refuse. He told me he was sorry about a thousand times and even gave me $120 for getting the old girl running... it didn't matter though, that didn't even cover the gas it cost for traveling back and forth from Dallas to damn near Oklahoma on a Harley and my 1987 Ford Bronco LOL! As I pulled out of his drive way and headed home I could see the truck off in the distance in his neighbor’s barn... almost shed a tear. I saw this truck two years ago in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Its now owned by some punk that dropped out of OU and has ratted that poor thing out... what a shame. Nick | ||

I know of a Javelin with weeds growing up around it right now. Within the city limits but very secluded that I'd say very few know about. | ||

Back in 1974, I found a 1968 Shelby GT 350 with a big block in it and GT 500 badges(except for the dash) I had kept my eye on it for about 2 years sitting in a garage up in an old mans garage. It was owned by his son in the Navy who was busy floating around the world some where. I got it for $1500 in 1976, and had it running in about a week. I drove it through my college years at Ferris and parked it at the married housing. There was a guy in the apartments behind me that had a Dodge Dayton coupe with the big wing on it. I kept it for over 23 years and finally sold it to a neighbor who completely restored it. He eventually sold it to another guy in town for more than he could pass up(Equates out to a 32X40 two story garage) I get to see it every now and then. Now before I get a rash, my motorhead neighbor across the street, did the tape measure talk with me about how much time a person has, marked on a tape measure, then he had me mark my age and it struck home in a very big way, I realized at the rate I was going I neither had the time nor the money to do with it what I wanted. I realized it was a game of leisure for very rich men, and I never thought of myself that way and it was too late to start. | ||

Man, seeing some of those cars sitting there really makes me mad. I hate it when people get a hold of cars and then just sit on them, just to see them rot away. And then they won't get rid of them or sell them to anyone. Some of those cars and rolling pieces of artwork and a part of automobile history. Truly a shame...  | ||

I looked at that site. It makes me sick. It reminds me of being a teenager working in a junk yard crushing cars. Oh to have some of them back! Did anyone see the Speed Channel show 'Two Guys Garage' Sunday am? They featured a '67 Camaro that had been sitting for twenty years. I know the guy that owns it. I used to occasionally work weekends doing body work at his salvage yard back then. I saw that car right after it was redone back then. Nice piece. | ||

My wife has the reverse problem. There is so much smashed crackers, dead fast food wrappers and rotten milk in her kid hauler that it smells like there is a barn in her car.  | ||

I have a pretty nice original 68 firebird 350 coupe that I just pay the storage locker fee on. I cant afford to put in the time and money it needs to drive it. It needs exhaust, a new battery, a water pump, and new tires. | ||

There's an old General Lee rotting in the weeds close to my parents. Never asked the guy about it but have heard stories about people trying to buy it and he wouldn't even talk about it. Same thing with an old 60's model Corvette that's been sitting in the same place since I was five. I remember seeing it when we went to a family farm to cut Christmas trees. Those things become local landmarks. "You go two miles past the green Corvette and make a left." | ||

Have any of you guys had the same situation that we have had in Aus. Prior to the global crash, old cars were worth $200 - $300 for scrap metal, we had a lot of dealers collecting everything and people were happy to get rid of their "old cars". I think the metal ended up in China. If the global economy had kept rolling on in Aus, there would be no "Barnfinds" left to restore. Now you have to pay to have old cars taken away. I'm curous to know how many other countries had the scrap metal man collecting our automotive heritage Anyone | ||

I know of a fully complete original Cord sitting in a garage. Problem is it is in about 100 boxes (fully disassembled). I bet it is still worth more than most peoples homes. | ||

its not a matter of sitting on the old cars, but some of these old cars are like family. I happen to have a pretty valuable car sitting in the garage right now, been there since 1977 at a tender age of 8. There are many reasons this particular machine still sits, one of them being I don't trust myself with it, if she were running I'd probably have seriously torn her up by now. Yeah, money to restore is an issue, but its probably worth more the way it is now in its mostly original state than it would be with a full resto on it. I've kinda always wanted to have it running for my dad before he crosses Jordan, I still have time so I'm just gonna hope he can wait on me. Plus these old cars are like family heirlooms, my son will end up with it when he turns 35 just like i did. I'd imagine alot of the cars in barns are thought of the same way by their respected owners. | ||
