and my tach bounces around. My bike has been sitting for about four months now. I fired her to life today and put some miles on her. I noticed that my speedo does not operate (the needle will not move)and miles are not being counted. My tach is inaccurate too (bounces all over the place). The speedo was working fine when I put her in storage, the tach has always be a little weird, but not this bad. Any ideas of what might be wrong with them? The cluster does light up as normal, just not operating like normal. | ||

battery terminal hygiene & tight connections, closely followed by bad ground strap/fastener at frame end, or corrosion/loose connection at cluster-harness junction | ||

Speed sensor, didn't even think of that! Won't have a day off till Monday. But, that is whats on the agenda. Checking all connections and replacing the speedo sensor. Thanks guys! I'll let ya know what happens.  | ||

Profile doesn't list model year, but depending on year it may be a speed sensor, or a front wheel sending unit if cable drive. Cable drive if you have the old wheel-type odometer; digital is sensor on the output shaft of the trans. If you have cable drive, the drive itself rarely goes, but the cables like to snap sometimes. I always install them then loosen the front axle nut with the bike on the ground. That allows the sender to rotate to a position that the cable likes, eliminating any tight corners. Then, I retorque the axle nut. | ||

Yeah, speed sensor. My -01 X-1 did the same thing. I was on a long trip, so just lived w/it. Got a new speed sensor at a dealer along the way. FWIW, the problem corrected itself, so I still have a new speed sensor in my personal stash. Anyway, pull it out and look at it. It may just have a bit of 'debris' on the end, and wiping it off may solve the problem. |
