I decided to pass some winter time with a chop of my tail section to get rid of the big thing sticking out the back. I'm almost finished, so I thought I'd post a couple pics. Note to self for future projects...14 gauge stainless steel is very hard to work with using common tools, and WILL ruin all blades and drill bits available at local stores, regardless of their cost or advertised quality/durability. Rainman, good point! I think I would get frequent hassle (read: tickets) without the plate lit up at night, and I commute before sunrise and after dark fairly often. I mocked up doing it tilted the other way, but couldn't get the plate lit up without keeping the separate plate light. So, I took the easy way out and just drilled a 3/8" hole under the tail light to fill with clear silicone. | ||

when i did my chop i didnt know that the tail light has clear plastic on the bottom so for a license plate light all u have to do is cut the under tail at the bottom of the tail light opening to a rectangle then bam! | ||

Yeah, that's effectively what I did if you look at my last pic. I just kept it small to be discreet. Still tested out with plenty of light on the plate. | ||

its not in the pic now but i ended up getting the bolt/lights mounted so i could keep it some what legal. Im also a state inspector so i dont worry about inspection | ||

Rainman, those LEDs you added in the under-tail section, combined with the thread that was just recently on here about the tiny front blinkers, has me thinking... Any reason those tiny "mirror eliminator" blinkers wouldn't work in the rear? They may look good in either the area where your LEDs were added, or as replacement in the same location as I have my OEM rear ones. | ||

Hey Ponti1, I have that setup you mentioned earlier. About using the ones someone used as block off plates for the mirrors. It works ok but it's not to visable during the day. The lights for some reason blink faster. As for a tail chop I used a xb tail tidy that I bought off of ebay along with some bullet type bolts with white leds angles toward the plate. I also cut the under tail to use the stock light to add more light on the plate. Toby | ||

Those are some real nice mods. I am also looking at hacking off that ridiculous-looking fender, but I'm not so confident of my own skills. I looked on ebay (search "buell tail tidy") and found what looks like a nice one made by evotech. It's pretty spendy ($100) but it has a built-in light, uses existing mounting space, and accommodates the turn signals. Anyone have any experience with it? I bought and installed that buell tail tidy kit about 7 months ago when it first came out. It was a little pricey, but it is great quality, easy to install, and has the plate light. Looks much better compared to the factory plastic contraption. I would definitely recommend, the price has even dropped a bit since I purchased it.   | ||

Ponti - when I made it, I had access to a machine shop. Used a sheet-metal roller, passed it thru 3-4 times to get the "right" curve. Then I smoothed the edges with a Scotchbrite wheel and bead-blasted it with fine silica. The curved piece is 14 ga. SS304, the hole cover is 1/8" aluminum that I curved with an anvil and a dead-blow hammer. The bars, that clamp the plate, and spacers are all aluminum too. Zack | ||

Hooligan, the tail tidy comes with some adapter brackets so that it will work with U.S. plates. | ||
