I can make more money flipping burgers at McD's than I can repairing bicycles, yet I'd rather ask "do you want a tube with that" instead of asking "do you want fries with that". My "profit motivation" is secondary in my secondary job choice, but it's only a seasonal job so not totally relevant. My "profit motivation" did finally kick in and I recently gave up on another part-time occupation since it was costing more to do that it was bringing in, I enjoyed it but it no longer made economic sense to continue it. Maybe I'll go work off-hours at a hardware store, I'd rather work at a bookstore but they only want full timers. And in case you missed the math, I've been juggling three jobs to pay the bills.
There was a recent news highlight locally where a business man gave up his lucrative career to start up a small sports related sports complex where they train kids. He said he's working 12 hours days, making much less money than he used to, but is much happier now. Profit is not always defined by cash. Cash is not always the prime motivator.
But I've gotta run now, trying to get a few things done in case the layoff axe hits. Maybe I'll move to middle TN if that's where all the jobs are now.

American workers DO want to do a good job. American workers are the MOST productive globally and take pride in being such.
You have made a personal decision to pursue jobs you enjoy doing but that don't pay as much. That's fine for you, but is predicated upon the rest of the economy NOT pursuing that course.
If you want to be a "ski bum", your employment is predicated upon someone wealthy being able to afford the ski vacation. If you want to be the guy who rents jet skis, there has to be someone who can afford to rent them.

Not at all, that would be an envyous position to be in, doing something one enjoys at a salary one can be very comfortable with, envyous indeed.
I do, however, hold some disdain for those people who follow the "anything for a buck and get rich or die trying" mantra as those types of folks tend to not play fairly or ethically or legally. Those are the types of folks who "pull the silver plug" upon their exits, they are also the types who steal their mother's eye teeth on the day they move or get kicked out of the house.

I am down on any entitlement that fails to deliver results (and I have yet see one that has) that is mandated and draconian in its collection and wasteful and useless in its distribution. Where to start: (and its gonna pi## a whole bunch of y'all off, so if you are easily offended skip this post) Prisons; Yep they are worthless, nobody does the full time, they are resorts for criminals that get gyms, cable, internet, porn and three hots and a cot. Firm believer in the old Gulag work camps, it definitely stops your repeat offenders. Public Education: It is a black whole of money, there is no amount of money that will cure it. they were bi@tchin about class sizes 20 years ago when I was there, and that is there battle cry now. And have the generalized test scores improved any?!?! Nope IRS: Delete this agency, charge everybody a flat tax and get on with the rest of our lives. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security deductions; wtf, I am never going to use any of them, I should be able to opt out. IF I have the need for services and failed to plan for that eventuality, then it is back on me, not the government. NASA: Really, space exploration, these are monies better spend here on earth... just go watch star trek or battleship galatica to get your space geek fix. Corporate Welfare: really arent we already giving them a huge pass on capital that is not taxed for building a new plant, employing so many people, pull the plug. If they cant make it, somebody else will see the opportunity advantage of building x product and do so. 1% for Art: this line item got passed down to every flippin municipality. If you are an artist and your craft cant make it on its own, it is not the governments job to come in and buy your product for a lobby display. They put a decorative fence around a remote power substation because the 'had to spend the money'
If it were up to me, I would be able to select and designate where my tax dollar goes. At least if they are going to waste it, I know whose pockets it hit first.
I agree with everything except the IRS and NASA, for the most part.
I think certain tax rules are benneficial as a whole and should stick around. Not all of them, though.
And NASA is so small in comparison I don't think we need to kill it. Anyways, I think the tech that we get from them (and let's not forget all the folks that employed by them - directly or indirectly) is worth the cost. The NASA budget is less than 3% of that for Social Security.

Oh, I agree completely. Unfortunately, there have been scumbags willing to do anything for a buck since the dawn of time. That ain't going away. Ever.
I think, though, there is a tendency to paint every person who is well off or CEO of a company being paid several million as one of these scumbags.
I think I am going to back into insurance and securities.... Just long enough to get my portion of the bail out. I figure I bilk the system well enough, I really only need to work for a month or two. Score a nice fat chunk and retire so all I have to do is ride, maybe I will write a book about it in few years. 'Bilking the Government Dummies' I like the sound of it. Then maybe a tour of Oprah & Dr. Phil to secure my celebrity. Wrap it up with a big endorsement contract from some former Whitehouse aides and good long infomercial on late nite TV.
