Are they big? Effective?

Last I knew they were the #2 lobby in Washington right behind AARP. Well, maybe a ways behind AARP, that lobby is a monster. Are there some less than desirable aspects to large "special interest" groups? Yup, but in these here United States if you want your voice heard you really have no choice other than support the groups that have YOUR interests at heart. In a representative republic your individual vote only goes so far and that power disappears as soon as the dust settles on the current election cycle. NRA is not the only game in town, but they are the most powerful. I support a couple others as well.

IMO, if you care about the 2nd Amendment's future, hunt, enjoy shooting sports, firearms collecting or make your living carrying a firearm it is money well spent. They support all these freedoms/activities. Been a life member since 1984 because I do all of the above.........

Lobbyists traffic primarily in information.
No bull, the NY legislature, composed primarily of NY City lawyers & racial grievance merchants, considered all .50 calibers equal, your Hawkins’s muzzle loader = my Barrett BMG and wanted to equally ban them all. Lobbyists explained the difference and our esteemed representatives have now so tied themselves in knots trying to ban something that we can still live our lives for another year or two.
As corrupt & degenerate as our representatives seem on occasion it is rare (not unheard of, but rare) for the money lobbyists spend to directly benefit the representative.
Lobbyists also carry information back to us. Safe to say that all representatives lie, some more than others, but they all lie. Lobbyists bring back the real information concerning our representatives intentions.

the lobbying is fine, but they send so much mail, wanting you to donate, sign up, buy things. I just want to be a member and support our right for guns...not a mark for selling me on the open market

is there another organization stronger in terms of political clout here in America than the NRA when it comes to protecting my right to bear arms?

In a word no. I am a member of the NRA because they are the 800 pound gorilla in Washington D.C. and the JPFO because they don't compromise. On the whole I prefer the JPFO so they get paid first but I stay a member of both. Also the NRA has become much more EBR friendly since 1994 they are aware it is the fastest growing segment of the firearms market.
I belong to a few RKBA web forums like thehighroad.us and thefiringline.com which is another way to get info on what our congresscritters have in mind.

For all you gun enthusiasts there is a disturbing trend out there:
According to Yahoo, several cities are doing toy gun back programs for kids and giving them McDonalds gift certificates for 'turning them in'
A fat docile generation is ahead.
