I haven't studied the rules in much detail yet, but it looks like more modifications are allowed in Superbike. One quick example is it looks like you can use exotic valve springs in Superbike, but not in Daytona Sportbike. I'd guess that the Buell's engines were closer to stock than most of the other bikes out there (the Buell's were probably very close to the Moto-St bikes which were horsepower limited and, therefore, probably had very minimal engine modifications.) The Japanese bikes probably had modifications similar to what they've been using in AMA over the past several years. It would be very interesting to know all the details of what was out there and what is being considered and what the specifications of the bikes were etc., but we'll never know those things until they're no longer relevant. It sounds like McWilliams may have had trouble with the "Superbike Spec." bike on the first night and then got some time in on the Daytona bikes so it wouldn't be a complete loss. Hopefully he did well enough on the Daytona bike to convince people who know all the details and hold the purse strings that it will be worth an effort. If they know, for example, they can get 40 more horsepower out of Superbike legal engine and he was running 1:44's on an underpowered bike, maybe some people at Buell and Harley (and some sponsors) will be ready to make the leap. The public line was that McWilliams was testing "Race kit components" for privateer efforts, and that may be all it was. There may be no intention to run any formal Superbike team this year. While I hope that's not the case and I hope there's more going on behind the scenes than we know about, it might not be a bad idea to go slowly. Do some work in Daytona Sportbike and build some teams and riders before trying to make the leap. I had thought they should have done something like that last year with an XBRR FX effort, but if they can at least get started in Daytona Sportbike in 2009, that would be a big step toward an eventual Superbike effort. The Daytona Sportbike class has SPECIFIC and NAMED bikes that can be homologated in 2009... notice that some Ducati are excluded from competing and therefore must compete in Superbike and not Supersport. Homologation rules are very specific. I doubt that the URAL sells enough bikes to allow their entry in Supersport - and even if they DID, they are NOT on the list so they'd have to be entered in Superbike. I know that many URAL fans are sorely disappointed that their favorite bike is not allowed to race in Daytona Supersport and instead must race in Superbike. Jerry - Vicodin is NOT vitamin V - despite what I may have told you in the past. Hey - I was inspired yesterday after seeing the Urals on display. They are really underrepresented in racing... hmmm... sponsorship idea maybe??? (Slaughter scratches his chin in a thoughtful manner - pondering) |
