Today was one of those days, but someone is looking after me somewhere, somehow... I had to go to a job site today about 100km's north of town, so I took the Buell of course, with plans of hitting the backroads on the way back to the office . I was actually itching to go as I haven't been through my favourite twisties since doing a riding course a month ago, and I wanted to try some things out. On the way home it rained, my front engine mount and the left-hand bolt snapped, and I found a nail in my back tyre... So no twisties today . But I decided to nurse the bike home with the engine pushing against the mount. The nail stayed in the tyre and didn't leak... and the engine dropped below the mount just as I rode into my driveway . Some days are just lucky days, and I'm thankful for them. So... Time to pull "X" apart and give him some TLC. I'll finally fit that Penske shock and new springs that I got at the beginning of the year, and I have to decide on using a standard mount or the billet mount... and maybe a new Ferodo front disc... and the bar across the top engine mounts that I can never remember the name of... Any thoughts on the standard vs. the billet mount? cheers, chili |

Well......I broke my left engine mounting bolt last year and it took the (standard) engine mount with it. Replaced the bolts and iso etc. and fitted a NRHS billet mount. Recently I started a long trip and got about 60 kays and, sure enough, my left engine bolt had snapped, but because the new engine mount was stronger, it took out the boss on the right side of the head. Not an expensive repair, under $150 Aussie dollars, but a bit time consuming. That included the trailer hire to get it to the welders after I'd stripped everything off so that he could get to it to weld it. Did my oil pump drive gear upgrade while I was waiting and replaced the rivetted clutch plate as well. Someone mentioned that mine was the first known Buell to break the engine mounting bolt after a billet mount was fitted. Don't know about this but the mount was strong enough to nurse the X1 home by keeping the engine in place. One thing though, the bolts broke both times with torn isos at the front. Relevant? Don't know. I suppose I'd done about 35,000km on the NRHS mount before the bolt broke. After all that, I still think the billet mount is the way to go. I'm just going to keep a closer eye on things. |

Hey Chili, I just happen to have that mount from a 2K X1 if you don't like the cost factor of the billet item. 50$ US+ship...you know where to find me. (Message edited by jstfrfun on November 11, 2008) |

Fullauto - I saw your thread in the knowledge vault. From my searches your's seems to be the only one. I haven't checked my isolator yet, but maybe it's torn too? The boss on the head looks ok, it's not worn so the mount wasn't rocking, but it has pulled out about a 1/4 of the last thread as the bolt snapped. Hopefully I can get the end of the bolt out without damaging the thread any further. Yep, it seems to be known as a "stenzel strut" after a company in Germany that makes them. I'm going to have a go at making my own, it doesn't look too difficult if I measure everything carefully... I'm thinking of going with the billet mount if Al has one in stock, and maybe a Ferodo front rotor too. A pity the Aus dollar has gone south compared to a few months ago . If Al doesn't have a billet one in stock I'll be in touch Jstfrfun, thanks for letting me know. |

Graham, Here's some info on a DIY Stenzel brace. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/396773.html?1224722734 |

Very cool, thanks heaps Loren, you just saved me a lot of nutting things out. Transfer punch idea is very neat. There's an engineering workshop next door to my work which should be able to do the bend and probably the counter bore too if they're not busy. |

Nice work. Any chance on producing these for sale? I want one but don't have access to the tools. I would rather give the cash to a badwebber. |

Al has a billet mount so I'm going to order one... and a Ferodo front rotor (I just like the straight spoke carrier more than the curved EBC one). I'll pull the bike apart this weekend and see what condition the isolator is in... I'd make a few of the struts, but I'm a little far away. I'm surprised no one in the U.S. makes them. |
