If I remember right, they're calling it "roto-molded nylon". Has to do with the spinning of the mold (roto) during the molding process. | ||

Don't plastic weld a fuel tank. Bad idea. They're not that expensive...especially considering the possible consequences! | ||

Hmmm I recently broke the front tang off my fuel tank, (98s1w) when I flipped the bike after hitting a dead animal. It does not look like the fuel bladder is compromised and I was considering plastic welding also, now probably not, it makes a very cool garrage wall decoration. | ||

Hootowl: The S1W had a tank (no cover). Some earlier models (like the S2) plus the X1 (and Blast?) have tank covers. Seeeu911: There was an NIB S1W tank on ebay about a week ago. The starting bid was $300. I made an offer (conciderably less, of course). He was looking for about $500 (reserve price) for the tank. I little steep for my blood  | ||

I picked up a S1W tank last spring for $120.00 Canadian. It was used and needed paint but the price was right. Keep Looking you will find a one. $500 is real steep in my opinion. | ||

The painted tanks are a Super Tough Nylon, while the unpainted tanks (anything with a cover over them) are a High Density Polyethylene. The tank covers ranged from Fiberglass on the S2, to initially Nylon for the painted X1 covers to Surlyn for the molded in color X1 (also XB) tank covers. Oh yeah, the RR, RS, & RSS were composite (fiberglass and possibly kevlar). Probably more than you needed (or wanted) to know, 1313 | ||

Here is the deal, I hate the X1 tank, and I forget who makes the aluminum tank that's unfinished and cost $800.00 (forget that). So what I'm doing is modifying a '96 S1 tank to fit the X1. I need to cut a small piece from the bottom of each tank and swap to fit the fuel pump. Then I need to cut and modify the rear of the X1 tank and attach it to the S1 tank so the seat will fit properly, this I had planned to do with epoxy and finish with body filler. Now hearing that the two tanks are different materials the welding part may not work, but this will not stop me. I will find a way to fit the fuel pump and it will work. I already have two reserve plans in my head so it will be on there by spring. | ||

BTW I suggest using a epoxy that is used on RV containers, IE Fuel, waste, etc. Is should be available at your local Auto Parts store. It is Fuel an oil proof an hardens like a rock. | ||

Thanks, I'll check that out. I've seen an X1 with a fuelie S3 tank on it, he modified the seat to wrap over the tank like newer M2's and S3's, didn't look quite right, seat to long, body lines didn't flow real well. But, to each his own. | ||

I would definitely recommend starting with a 99+ S3 tank though. | ||

Donn, The tank on my S1W now is from a Black 2000 M2 tank bought from Ebay, it's identical to a 98S1W tank as near as i can tell (though the specs say a 98S1W is 5.4 gallons, and a 200M2 is 5.0 gallons ???). I stripped the Fisher price letters off with dental floss, it looks great.. You should be able to find one if you're patient for between $130-$200 on ebay...I did. If you need one NOW, I have the one I took off my bike that is black and had bubbled letters...I tried to cut them off and managed to expose a couple tiny spots of primer. A touch up with black paint, a few blasts of rattle can clear, and you'd have a tank that would hold you over a little while until you find a erfect one one on ebay. I'll sell it to you for whatever you think you could get for it once you find the final replacement, (or you could just paint this one...). Let me know, I could send you a pic if you wanted.... Hootowl, That would be easier but I don't like the look of that tank either, I like the small tank much, much better, plus I can bring my clip ons back further and tuck in easier with the smaller tank. | ||

It may be easier to convert it to a carb than it will be to get a fuel pump inside a tank that wasn't meant to have a pump in it. Are you able to reseal the tank after welding on it? Some sort of goo you pour in and slosh around? | ||

Carb conversion would cost $$$. Till I got a carb, ignition module, wiring harness?, I would have more than I would care to spend, I mean a carb alone is over 2 bills isn't it? I have around $150 bucks invested in two used fuel tanks. There is a sealant made just for MC fuel tanks, it works very well. Anything is possible if you set your mind to it. | ||

Don't get me wrong, carb conversion may come further down the road, right now I'm putting out 100 RWHP, if I decide to push further a carb may be my only option, from what I've read on here it doesn't sound like the F.I. can handle much more. I was looking at your bike in your profile (Hootowl), That bike would look killer with a color matched tail as well. |
