OK, I am getting very irritated with my local Buell shop. I was just told that the part number for the rear shock on my 99 X1 is obsolete. OK, I understand that there was a recall on the 2000-2001 years for a suspension problem. What I don't get is how is it even possible that Buell did not substitute the old shock with a new? My local service shop is telling me that I might have to buy an aftermarket shock, which I am sure it is going to be more than what OEM is, because there is no longer a shock from the factory I can put on it. Anyone out there have a part number that should work for this part so that I can do the job of the parts manager and get that on order. Or maybe an aftermarket company that has an inexpensive replacement? Thanks. | ||

Have them check if the obsolete "number" has been superseded and go from there. With us being told that virtually every single part for a 1995 S2 can still be ordered, I'd be surprised to learn that you can't get a new 1999 X1 shock. But then I've been surprised on more than one occasion. Just pinged your profile showing you are in Hawaii. You might be well off to contact one of the site sponsor dealerships here. | ||

The only thing available is the recall kit 94017Y retailing for $664.40. The later rear shock can be ordered by dealers from Vintage Parts Incorporated K0407.01A1 for $412.50. The proper mount K0407.01A1 is still available for $72.90. You're still looking at $485.40. With that in mind aftermarket isn't a bad idea. I believe RaceTech charges around $250 for a rebuild. | ||

Tazman, I had the same issue ... but they didn't tell me about the recall kit until after they sold me the aftermarket. Nor did I hear anything from the dealer about rebuilds. So, I got the exposed spring thingie with the remote can ... looks alot like the Penske model Al has on American Sport Bike. I liked it at first ... performed well ... looked good (except for the remote can). Two years into it and it needs rebuilt ... air leaks. Overall, I wish I had purchased the recall kit ... and still might. Rick, thanks for the other info. I hope my dealer knows VPI 'cuz I don't see them on the web. Xnr | ||

as i understand it, the penske and the works can be rebuilt by anyone, except for the nitrogen chrage for the canister. The showas were junk and theres no way i would pay that much for an oem shock. | ||

Get a Penske. For the difference in money, the Penske would be the much better choice. | ||

As BAD KARMA SAYS ********* check out American Sport Cycle, they probably been there and have dealt with the issue, and probably come up with a better solution. |
