Just wanted to ask those who made the switch from a 180 to 190 rear tire; Any handling difference? Cornering? What about running a 190 on a track day? Thanks.

I switched (free tire from friend). You will have to take the lower belt guard off. I am a new rider. I only have 6,500 miles under my belt since June. What I have noticed is that I am more confident with the 190. The profile is rounder, which smooths out my corners. The bike now rolls into a turn, instead of darting. With the 180, the bike seemed to be an all or nothing feeling for me in the corners. I can now control the lean with more confidence. I think with more experience, I will get comfortable enough to go to a 180 again. For an experienced rider, not me, the 180 should prove to be a better track tire. The profile of the 180 should lend to a larger contact patch while leaned over. But truth be told, the 190 looks alot better.

Your 180 must of been bald or at the wrong pressure. All tires feel like crap once they get squared off. It takes more effort to lean, hence why it feels like "all or nothing"

Most people forget how their tire felt when it was new, and then compare a old tire to a new tire. The new tire will win every time.

isnt it the other way around , the 190 has a bigger contact patch than the 180?

the 190 will (relatively) slower to turn in that the 180 because it has a larger profile.... since the bike has to travel much more distance to get to the other side of the tire, so thusly a 180 is a quicker-acting tire

You will have to take the lower belt guard off.
I take the belt guards off anyways, clean the looks of the bike. And what are they for? like keeping the chain lube from spitting on the bottom of your seat cowl, wait.... its a belt .... and whats the chance your foot is going to get stuck in the sprocket if you're not doing a chainsaw???

so so so very true

The 190 has a bigger contact patch when straight up. Since it is a wider tire, the profile is different. It has to be flatter across the tread section, or else it would be taller. Take a look at a 180, 190 and 200. You will notice a hugh difference in the flatness across the tire and also the sharper curve at the edge. If you lay those tires at a 45 degree angle, you will see that the 180 has the best and largest contact patch. I think the 180 is the best cornering tire, but it is too aggressive for my current skills.

The 190 is no slower. It depends on rim width and is the tire designed for the wheel's width.

The guards will fit with the 190 on the older smaller guards before the swingarms design was changed.

Ever see a belt come up hit someones leg ??? I did and it almost took him off the bike when it slapped his calf.

The guards are for preventing stones and other debris from getting onto the belt, causing premature failure. I snapped mine finally last night, and I got no lower guard.

I love my 190, no noticeable difference over a 180. However, a 190-50 tire is not as tall and a 180-55, so you lose some top end and your speedo will be off by 4-5mph at freeway speeds.

The 180 should handle better strictly because when leaned over the area in contact with road is closer to the bikes center of gravity than when using a wider tire. Therefore it will have less of a tendency to want to sit up while turning

Well I don't have that tendency with a 190 on my bike. I don't think Ben Spies has it on his either.... But I'm no Ben Spies either. Maybe tell him though that he should switch to a 180.

Your bike is designed to perform best with the size it comes with. If you like it better another way, who am I to criticize?

Its also a 6 inch wheel.

And many are racing on 190's here in Wisconsin. And much feedback comes from it. The 180 does the job well. I never argued that. But the 190 isn't any worse.

I put a Dunlop 616 in a 190 width on my Uly. Works great, handles as well as before if not better. All guards are on; no rubbing anyplace. Fits fine!

doesnt the ducati desmodici moto gp bike run with a 190 on it...?

btw i saw a ducati desmodici rr superbike at a bike night one time, the bike is a beast!!! when i was talking to the owner he said you have to start the bike and keep it running for like 5 minutes at +6000 RPM or it will just die on you its below that RPM, he said its because the oil needs to get up to temperature.... weird right?

...and the Duc is *designed* to have a 200.

Startin' to sound like a Harley crowd here....if you're more concerned with looks, go wider. If you want your bike to handle the way it was designed, stick with stock width. If you're not happy with the handling on stock sizes...it's a *Buell*, grab a manual and a screwdriver and tune your suspension!

Sometimes one step up isn't a noticable difference. I run a 180 rear on my S2 with factory Marchesinis (up from 170) - riding back to back with my S1W (with stock 170), the handling difference is virtually nonexistant. The reason I changed that bike is availability - 180s are a 'standard' size these days, and if I'm out somewhere and need a tire without a hole in it, just about any UJM store will have one in stock I can use.

A misconception is that a wider tire will give you a bigger tire overall contact patch.

The overall contact patch will not change because the weight of the vehicle stays the same.

The contact patch will change either wider or longer but the overall size of the contact patch will not change.

In the case of a wider patch you will get a shorter patch, in case of a longer patch you will get a skinnier patch.

On bikes with power as mild as XBs, and on rims of this width, you're wasting your cash on 190s. Unless you run a wider rim, you're gonna distort the tire's profile. And even if it works okay, what's the point? Leave that garbage for the cruisers and the stunters.

Next time you're at the track, take a look at the racebikes that your XB'd be running against if you were racing, bikes in that class. None are running 190s. There are reasons why.

A wider tire's gonna have side effects on a bike with geometry as extreme as an XB, and on such a short wheelbase. Its a bad place to be experimenting. Do yourself a favor; buy the best 180 you can find, and learn to use it. Tons of ways to spend money that'll actually improve your bike and your riding.

On XB racebikes?--other bikes in that class? Formula 3 (or 2) Twins? I only see them on big horsepower, and even then, only on wider rims.
