Another much improved ECM update/reflash has just been released which supercedes the original update detailed below.

Per Anonymous as of September 16th...

The updates are live in the US, not something a dealer has to wait for, although many are not yet aware. As soon as a US dealer has his/her Digital Tech machine online (and many are permanently on-line), the download is automatic as of earlier today, and it is then available to whatever 1125R is hooked up to the machine.

Mixture is not richer, it's now correctly done at exactly the right time and the spark map is now right, which was the biggest issue. The bikes will not only run better, they will be cooler and the fuel mileage will be significantly better. ... It is a very good update. Just do it!

And more excellent information from OdinBueller at Liberty H-D/Buell...

This is for the DTII update released on September 16, 2008. It only affects 2008 models (all 2008 Helicon models are eligible). The 2009 models ship from the factory with these corrections already in place. No word on this being a product program as of yet, so there may be labor charges to get this done. Shouldn't take more than 0.5 hour including test ride to set the AFV.

The 2009 models have a completely different set of calibrations due to the O2 sensor relocation and new fuel injectors.

This re-flash is not (so far) associated with a product program that can be referenced on h-dnet.com. Here's what the servicing dealer needs to do...

Update Digital Technician II to version 2.002.

From the first DTII screen, click on "What's New".

Scroll down to the "Re-flash" section, and it will show all the updated 1125 calibrations.

PM or call me if anyone has any questions.

Chris (OdinBueller) aka "Moose"

Again, the above supercedes the following from Springtime 2008:

Thanks to OdinBueller of Liberty Harley-Davidson/Buell for all the very helpful information!

Buell Motorcycle Company has implemented an updated Electronic Control Module (ECM) calibration. The updated calibration provides improved cold and hot restart functionality and improved throttle response. The updated calibration also provides optimized electrical system draw and electrical accessory operation.

Motorcycles Affected
This Product Program applies to all (foreign and domestic) 2008 Buell 1125R models built prior to April 04, 2008.

System functions updated with new calibration:

Accessory port is controlled by the ECM and will turn off if the ECM reports a deficit on the charging system. Do not install accessories directly to the battery or anywhere else on the bike except the accessory plug.

ECM will now control cooling fan operation independently and is regulated by coolant temperature and battery voltage.

Idle RPM is now impacted by inputs from coolant temperature and battery voltage. This may raise the RPM slightly if the programmed conditions are met. Under normal operation the idle will remain at 1250 RPM.

Idle Air Control function has been changed to improve tip-in throttle response and low speed driving.

Low Battery Voltage Lamp will now come on at 11.9 volts instead of 11.5 volts to provide improved maintenance notification.

It is normal for the fuel pump to cycle periodically to maintain fuel pressure after key off. The amount of time allowed for this has been reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes maximum.

Your 2008 Buell 1125R, if built prior to April 4th, may receive the ECM via re-flash free of charge at any Buell dealer.

Updated ECM calibrations are reportedly ready to go for all domestic/USA (California included), European, & Australian models.

All H-D/Buell dealers have an online tool known as H-DNet. There's a "Service Document Viewer" that should show all bulletins, product updates, warranty info, and stuff like that, including this one.

If they don't provide one, ask your dealer for your reflash verification printout.

Note: Despite normal convention which requires use of 12V vehicle power, it seems that in order to guarantee success when reflashing Buell DDFI-3 ECMs, the TechLink II (the orange box) must be powered by AC.

Digital Tech II support always says that when communicating with the vehicle via the ALDL connector, it should be done on vehicle power. This may be a new issue with Buell models only. If the vehicle battery has 12+ VDC, and the technician is having difficulty with the re-flash procedure (possibly at the key off/key on sequence), then the TechLink II should be put on AC power after restarting DT II (rebooting the machine completely, otherwise you will encounter unhandled exception errors).

Thanks again to OdinBueller of Liberty Harley-Davidson/Buell for the above very helpful information!

Most major highways are 65mph - 70mph depending on the State once outside city limits. Smaller single lane highways in OR are at 55 mph.

So how do they determine MPG? To get 53 seems a little ambitious for the real world.

There has just been a UK newspaper test of the 09 CR (Daily Telegraph).
It was suggesting that Buell/Rotax had a similar communication issue to that which lead to a space probe that crashed into Mars due to a metric/imperial units error.
Do Buell think we were born yesterday?
Just goes to show what poor development work has actually gone on. Having owned a Firebolt for many years I am proud to be a Buell owner and can't wait for delivery of my 09 1125R but don't try and make junvenile excuses

If it was a conversion error seems like all the fuel/spark maps would be wrong, not just lower speeds. Sounds like a crock to me.

That is funny that they can build a bike, but can't do a proper conversion.

Yeah it's funny that they can put a man on the moon but can't do the proper conversion to land hardware on Mars.

Stranger things have happened to simpler issues. Unfortunately it happens almost everyday.

I see 42MPG at 80MPH, 44MPG at 75MPH and 46MPG at 70MPH. That's resetting the AVG meter and riding about that speed for ~5 miles in a tuck (with the trunk on).

I might try 65MPH today, but only if I deem it safe!

Around town being easy on the throttle I see ~36MPG.

My work parking space is ~24 miles from my house, I get 42MPG back and forth if I take it easy merging/passing and stay under 80MPH.

Gas light comes on around 165miles.

All of this is 20-25% better than before the flash.

Also notice a big improvement in MPG and smoothness. I have to drive an hour and a half to Austin to get my bike worked on. I got 32 mpg on the way down. I hit traffic coming back and still got 44 averaging about 68mph.

I think the new flash is an improvement over things that I did not even notice before. The bike got smoother especially at lower speeds.

65MPH and a full tuck got me 51MPG, not the 53MPG stated by Buell THOSE LYING BASTARDS! Think I can lemon-law this thing? I mean seriously I think at only 51MPG I really ought to have a case. Maybe the FCC for false advertising?

'course maybe if I wore leathers instead of an Aerostich with the vents open, aired up the tires and took the trunk off the back ... Nah...
Watch for this lemon in the classifieds soon...

...as soon as they come out with the next version with 20% more power and factory hard bags

Fair comment, Josh; I'd be happy with mpg that starts with a 5 (but not 5!) at 65 mph. Ship that lemon over here to Oz, my 09 is still not here yet from USA. And thanks for the info!

I talked to my service manager yesterday, and when I go in for the latest sidestand spring/etc. recall, they will thoroughly test my battery and I presume charging system, he is agreeing with me that I may have a bad battery.

I seem to be getting 35 to 36 mpg now, a 4 to 5 mpg improvement, on my av. on the dash, but I am just doing local running around this week. I haven't put more than about 18 miles without stopping this whole last tankful, and have probbly only been averaging 6 or 8 miles between stops.

Hopefully I can get some real riding in soon for a more realistic test.

Did the math on my last tankful, and it went DOWN to 33 mpg!?

And I have been taking it fairly easy on her this last tank.

However, I am obviosly having some sort of electrical gremlin, I am hoping just a bad battery, and until that issue is fixed, I guess much cannot be accurately said about the new flash and my motorcycle.

Oh yeah, it feels like it runs a bit better at part throttle openings, up to about atleast half even 3/4 throttle, and past that, it just feels flat, especially WOT at higher rpms.

So has anyone else noticed an uneven idle?

Sometimes I'll be at a stop light, either in neutral or clutch in, and it'll rev from idle at about 1250 up to about 2k rpm or so. Then just settle back down. WTF over?

More so with the latest flash the ECM monitors the clutch and gear position. If you are at idle, in gear and slowly ease out the clutch, the RPM's will rise to 1700-1900rpm's. I guess this is to keep the engine from stalling, when riders are not accustomed to the lower flywheel inertia of the 1125r versus the XB engines.

Just my $0.02. May or may not be what you are experiencing.

On other possible cause. Higher engine temperatures reduces the output of the voltage regulator. This may cause the voltage to drop below 12.5 at idle. One of the earlier updates was a change to have the ECM monitor the voltage and temperature and may raise the idle to keep the voltage above 12.5 volts.

Just got the reflash over the weekend. I had no complaints about the bike before, but I would have if I'd known how great the bike would run post-flash. The motor is smooth like butter at all RPMs, and my fuel economy has gone up five-ish miles per gallon. There HAS to be a trade-off, but I haven't found it yet.

The trade off is the bigger SEG on your face and trying to explain to all the nay-sayers that you really do love your 1125r!

Mine was just like yours, pretty darn good b4 the flash and, much better post flash.

So my bike is smarter than I am...

This morning I was rushed so I fired her up, threw on gloves and helmet and rode off. I'm idling through my parking lot with the CT at about 75 (I know I know I should have waited) and the bike is idling at about 3500rpm. Weird! But as soon as she topped 90 degrees she settled back down.

I love the bike. Now the silly little $6 plug needs to arrive so I can make her better =)

+1 On the bike being smarter that I.

I got poked one night by a co-worker, and discovered a 7500rpm soft rev limiter till the light stops blinking "cold".

Still kicked his a$$, tho!
