This just released from Buell;

"Buell Distribution Company, LLC. has determined that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists on certain 2009 model year 1125CR model motorcycles built April 11, 2008 through September 11, 2008.

These model motorcycles built during the above date range may experience a premature failure of the rear cylinder cam chain tension guide, part number F0020.1AM. This can cause plastic debris to block the oil pump screen, possibly leading to oil starvation and engine seizure. This condition may allow the engine to seize, resulting in rear wheel lock-up. This could result in a crash, which could cause injury or death to the rider.

We have voluntarily declared this a defect related to motor vehicle safety (Campaign 0836) to allow us to formally recall all affected motorcycles. The remedy is to replace the rear cam chain tensioner, P/N F0021.1AMA with an updated tensioner, P/N F0022.2AM. A service bulletin outlining the repair and credit procedure will follow within two weeks. Based on the schedule our supplier has provided we expect to begin shipping our first wave of repair kits, on or before the week of October 20, 2008.

Once I get more information, I'll be sure to let everyone know.

Chris

Maybe for Buell, but a cost of $0.00 to the owner.

Is the build date on the plate where the VIN is?

Wow the first recall that does not involve my bike!

Hmmm... I'll have to keep an eye out on this one. I think my build date is *just* after that Sept. 11 cut off, but I'll check to make sure.

Am I the only one wondering about the dates being earlier in 2008 for a 2009 model (development models?), or how the engines in a CR are different from an R such that this would only impact the CRs? Something doesn't hit me right. I feel like another shoe is about to drop.

I also question how this is only an issue on the CR and not the R. aren't the engines identical?

Build date is on the VIN sticker. Not sure why only the CR, but there is something different.

the only way i could figure it was if they got a faulty run of parts and all they were engines destined for the new cr's.

other than that i wonder how it wouldnt effect any of the other bikes also...

Yeah... the CR's really make more power, they just didn't want to make the R's jealous.

It's the High Performance, Low Drag Rear Cylinder Cam Chain Tensioner that really makes the difference.

Sounds like a batch defect issue or a material change issue

That ought to teach the CR owners to try and pull a fast one (pun intended) on us R people!!

They start building '09's early in the year so that they'll have some stock to sell once the model is announced.

Also, the 2009 R's have been a month or two behing the CR's - I think they were building CR's before '09 R's, possible because they knew there was quite a stock of leftover '08's out there.

Nothing about this sounds odd to me - sounds like Rotax tried a new supplier or design for this part for '09, and they found out that it didn't pan out pretty early on. Or it could just be a bad batch, like others mentioned.

Working in tech support at the company I work for , it can be a real PITA when one of your suppliers decides to make a material change without your knowledge , no fault of Buell here , they cannot make every part , and have to rely on other manufacturers .

+1 for Buell again taking appropriate action and their customer service .

Well F***. My bike was built ON Sept 11, which means by all accounts I am involved in this. I supposed perhaps if my bike was built late in the day then i might be okay, but I'm not holding my breath.

My dealer checked my VIN in HD-Net yesterday and there wasn't antyhing on there for this for my bike. Anyone know when that would be updated?

Yes its good that Buell did the action. Waited a year for them to get the bugs worked out but wouldnt ya know 3 weeks after getten the CR WHAM safety recall.
Was made in Sept but dont know what day. Called the dealer today and told them about it and my VIN is part of the recall. They said all they have is what Odin posted above and am getten back with them after the 20th of Sept. GREAT 3 weeks old.
Maybe they can fix the gas drippen from the vent hose. NO SMOKING WITHIN 50ft !!!

To all CR owners;

PM me with your VIN, and I'll be happy to run it and check if you're affected by this recall. Please use all CAPS in the subject and type in "BADWEB" somewhere in the text so I can filter out your message in my spam filter folder.

Looks like I'm clear. Nothing on HD Net for my VIN. My dealer was told that they started using the new part half way through the day and mine already has it in it.

Of course, being the service department, they want me to bring the bike in for the "2500 mile service" (which there is none), and they will pull off the chain covers and verify it's the correct part.

No thanks.

Supposedly, this defect becomes apparent within the first couple hundred miles. I have well over 1000 on mine now, and the HD guy said if I haven't noticed anything yet then I'm probably not ever going to.

Next time I change the oil I'll check the oil filter screen for any plastic debris and call it a day.

Has there been any categorical answer to this question, since the faulty part has an identical P/N to the '08 models?

Does everything it touches have the same part number as the 08s? It may be that something else changed and doesn't like that part anymore.

Stopped by the dealer and got them to order the parts. They say only .4 of an hour to do the work. So it doesnt sound intrusive.
Bikes running fantastic !!!
