i'm starting to get concerned. 12k on my 03 xb 9 , and it makes horrible noises when shifting into 2nd gear. i use the clutch all the time. i have the proper primary oil type & quantity. (heck i change the trans. oil every 1,500 mi.)guess i'm gonna do a major tear-down this winter. my questions are ,will the newer (06?) trans componets fit/fix my problem ? what is the "FIX" ??? signed "jap transmissions RULE" !!!!! |

Check your clutch adjusment and primary chain adjustment. |

clutch & pri. chain are adjusted correctly. (i own a service manual & know how to use it) |

Well, sounds like you are in the same boat as me... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/386201.html?1218776868 I may pull the motor apart this winter. First I'm going to replace the clutch to see if that fixes it. Pehaps one of the plates are warped? |

I was getting gear clash shifting into 2nd gear, but since tightening my chain, it has gotten a lot better. I did it by the book and went on the tighter side of the scale. I push up on the chain until my finger hurts! No more than 1/2 inch slack and I gave up trying to find the tightest point. |

yeah adjusting the primary chain can be a PITAss.(finding the tight spot) pull the spark plugs, put the bike on your rear stand , trans in hi-gear , mark the chain with chaulk, etc. now if i can get some good feedback on trans "fix"(or do we just have to accept it as a Harley- thing?) while i have the motor apart i'll go ahead and install big bore pistons & lightened crank ! |

Cliff, I have 42,000 miles on my 2003 XB9S and nearly always get the crunch when shifting into second. I've decided to not worry about it as it has been doing this for years. Keith |

Why pull the plugs to adjust the primary chain? Just hold a rag over the inspection port and blip the starter in neutral... |

Having had something of the same issue with both of my bikes, I went to a GP shift pattern. That change alone did wonders for the 1-2 gear change. Might be something to consider, though it does take getting used to. |

i find that by pulling the plugs i have a lot more control of finding the tight spot. when you hit the starter the motor jumps quite far ! (i find i can be much more accurate finding the tight spot by pulling the plugs) |

yea my bike does that too much, is it bad for the gear-teeth? But my bikes does it in pretty much every gear once and a while.... when adjusting a chained-drive bike, slack is good, so I share the same ideal to the primary and keep it fairly loose but still following the owners manual specs.... So what is that noise coming from? is seems like the transmission, right? so why would the primary chain effect something in the transmission like that? so the sure-fix is to tighten the primary chain? |

no,.... tightening the primary chain may calm down the gear-dog crash but it ain't gonna fix it . |

Also, shift right as you pull in the clutch. Don't pull in the clutch then wait. |
