I haven't a clue what happened, nor when, where, how, or why. Typical Monday morning commute to work; I-805, northbound, approaching San Diego proper. I'm telling myself that the X1 feels like it only has 2 gears, fourth and fifth. My offramp comes up real quick; i get off and initiate deceleration. Transmission downshifts into fourth gear without complaint, and THAT'S IT! No more. Once the shift lever drops into fourth, it feels like I just stepped onto concrete. It doesn't budge one bit. No play at all. Engine running or not, bike moving or not, hot or cold, clutch in or out, i can not catch any gear below 4th. Anyone familiar with the same situation or similar? The transmission has shifted like a dream since new, has rarely been abused, and there has been no missed, blown, hard, or otherwise abnormal shifts. All maintenance items are in compliance. Heeellllllppppp!!!!!!! |

Same thing happened to My bike. But I only had firs an second. Took apart tranny, I replaced the shift drum an forks. mad it shift better than ever. Also another problem along with the drum an forks was the shifting mechanisim inside the primary was out of alignment. In your man. is a procedure for alignment. Try that forst than move to the tranny. |

sounds like your c-clip on your shifter detent broke in half. Happened to mine last year. Pain in the ass to fix due to the fact that you have to remove the primary cover, then the stator and clutch to get to it. You will need a strong impact wrench or a big breaker bar!! |

Time to start digging. At least be glad you have a tube framer, with the trapdoor tranny. It takes a few steps to get the tranny out, but it's not that bad. It could be a piece of a broken primary chain tensioner wedged somewhere in there jamming the frequencies. Thats a pretty easy fix (just pull primary cover and replace it). Use the metal primary cover gasket to save yourself much pain and suffering. It is also possible the bearings in your 5th gear drive assembly have self destructed. That is what happened to me. I thought the normal failure scenario for this was to be stuck in 5th. Hope that this is not the case, but if it is I can give you some tips to minimize the pain. You can't tell for sure until you pull the tranny, but a hint would be a little crunchy grindy noise if you pull the belt off and rotate the front belt sprocket shaft by hand. It will sound like it is coming from right inside the shaft (because it is). You can easily pop off the bearing seal from the right side of the bike as well, without removing much at all, and be able to do a limited inspection of one of those bearings. Thats a poor lube circulation area anyway, and it's only a $1 seal or something, so popping it, inspecting the bearings in there, and flushing some lubricant through there once every year or so ain't a bad idea. edited by reepicheep on November 20, 2003 |

Sound exactly like the problem I had. I came off the interstate and couldn't down shift. When I took off the primary and pulled the clutch basket my detent plate fell right out. |
