My '09 does not like to start. Tonight was real bad, 50s riding to work, 40s and wet after work. It took me 6 times of pressing the starter button, bike cranked over and died right away, I listened for fuel pump to stop whining and try it again. Never once touching the throttle. Bike has 600 miles, and it hasn't been getting better. Is this normal? (Message edited by bikertrash05 on October 03, 2008) | ||

Do a TPS reset. Have the dealer ck intake seals. Get a factory reflash as the cold start enrich might be off a little. This should not cost anything but your downtime. I've seen new HD run like crap and hard to start. I update the ecm with the latest version and they run fine. Good luck | ||

Mine was doing that, after I reset my tps and tried to do the square idle mod. Is there a trick to the TPS reset that i'm not doing? I just went by the tuning guide with ecmspy. Is the bike supposed to be at operating temp before doing it? My cold start enrichment was showing 120% and the bike wasn't even cold. That seemed like a lot of extra fuel for a warm bike. | ||

With an '09, there are no TPS resets. And w/only 600mi, I wouldn't get too excited, yet. FWIW, both my '01 and '08 bikes do that from time to time. When it happens, I just add a touch of throttle while cranking. I hold that touch of throttle for about 5 sec, then let go, and let the bike warm up normally. And yeah, it does seem to happen when the temp is a bit lower. If it doesn't get better in a few hundred miles, or gets worse, you may have an Idle Air Control issue. its normal after 1K miles or so the motor will loosen up and run 100% better if not have the dealer or you raise the idle a hair no more really | ||

Thanks for the comments. I think the humidity might have had something to do with it. Friday it fired up on the second time, it was colder but also less humid. | ||

When it's colder, there's more drag on the engine due to increased oil viscosity, so that and tightness of a new engine sounds like it's fairly normal. But if it still exhibits hard starting when it's fully broken in, say around 5000 miles or so, then I'd say there might be a problem. | ||

It's also OK to give the engine a small amount of steady throttle to keep it running for a minute or so until it's warm enough to run on it's own. What fouls plugs is blipping the throttle. |
