Finally did my intakes seals. While I was at it, I did a #45 slow jet and the 2 1/2 turns on the lo speed needle. The bike is a joy to ride! I have a CF OVAL intake and a "modified" stock muffler. Is it necessary to further tune that low speed needle? I am concerned about carbon build up. Has anyone tried those adjustable low speed needles? |

How come no body ever ask'es where the TIMING MARK should be set ??? If the timing is not set correctly, all the carb. tuning and big $$$.$$ parts will not make the engine run much better ... |

I've got both my low-speed needles set for 2.5 turns. No issues on the S2, but I have a low-throttle stutter on the S1W. If you're concerned about carbon buildup, turn the screw in a bit at a time (1/4 turn or so), ride, evaluate. When you get to ridability issues, go back out 1/4 turn and leave it there for a while. I've found I can adjust it on-bike if I use the screwdriver insert for a drill, with a small flatblade bit in it. Short enough to get in there without pulling the carb off the bike. Not to hijack, but my S1W is a stock-engined bike (thunderstorm top end), Buell CF race air filter and gutted SS2R muffler. At idle or, say 15% throttle or less, it stutters. WOT its perfectly happy. I think (gonna pull it today) it's a 195/45 setup in there. Might step it up to a 48 slow jet, and make sure nothing's gummed up. Anyone have any thoughts? It's run less than 500 ft above sea level most times. ...timing is set per-manual... |

If I were you I would try a tick more time in it, see if a couple degrees cleans up the bottom. |

Have mine set up this way: 2 1/2 turns out from the seat ... #48 low speed ... Radus'ed side, slide hole drilled out, and needle raised 0.050 inch ... #200 high speed ... |

Lafayette, if I advance the timing, I am guessing I gotta go richer hi and lo jets. You really think the timing should be advanced, huh? Why? No worries about hi-jacking, Rat, I do it all the time. I think my best performance mod would be to lose 40 pounds! |

For every 12 pounds you can lighten your bike or yourself you gain 1 rolling HP that will not show up on a DYNO !!! Set my timing with the timing mark just coming into the rear of the timing plug hole ... "i" do not use GUESS WORK on my jetting as "i" use a FUEL/AIR RATIO GAUGE to adjust my jetting and "i" do not have the big $$.$$ to tune with a DYNO ... The FUEL/AIR RATIO GAUGE gives you "REAL WORLD" tuning capability as you ride ... |

Ummmm......"i" = I = 3 fewer keystrokes, and proper English grammer.... Just a thought. |

Well, got mine sorted the easy way today. Opened it up with a 48 slow in hand, ready to go in...and found a 190 main and unmarked slow installed. Hm. Wonky contact lenses be damned, that unmarked one sure looks smaller than the marked 45 I have in the kit... Put in the 45, went 2.5 out, rode it. 1000% better. No stutter, I could turn the choke off less than 20 minutes after startup...totally new animal. All I can guess is the unmarked slow jet was the stock 42, and it had slipped past me the last time I was in there...weird. Silas - depending on your main jet (you didn't post what it was) and rideability, a 45 slow should be fine with a stock(ish) muffler and CF air cleaner. If part throttle and low throttle openings are riding OK, and it doesn't hiccup when you whack it, you should be just fine. If it hesitates when you get into it I'd look into a larger main jet...but if it's behaving itself, ride it for a while, then pull and read the plugs. The only 'adjustable' piece I put on my bikes is the idle-speed adjuster cable/knob - it was stock on my S1W and I LOVE it, I put it on my S2 as well. Nice for all-season riding, makes bitter-cold-weather idle adjustments much more painless. |

The thing pulls me [280 pounds] from a dead stop to about 100 plus without a miss in what can't be too much further than a 1/4 mile. What i like now is a I don't get the "marbles" rattle a part throttle openings. I am sure my intake seals were the main cause, but that low jet change and the 2 1/2 turns had to help. I never leave my enrichner on that long. Maybe 3-4 minutes tops. Does octane booster effect those intake seals any? |
