Ok,

Just got a BMW XChallenge to keep the Uly company. Does anyone have any recommendations on chain cleaning and oiling?

Do it regularly and after rainy, mucky rides. Use quality materials. Have a good day!

For my KLR-250, I took a suggestion I googled up that came from an F650 group.

Instead of buying a $90 chain and applying $9 per can chain wax to it, I bought a $30 non o-ring chain, and I spray it with $1.97 Advance Auto "Multi Purpose Lubricant" (foaming sticky stuff, not WD40) or just lithium grease.

The logic was that a well maintained high quality o-ring chain may last 7000 to 10000 miles on road, maybe 5000 to 7000 miles offroad. It will cost $150 by the time you are done.

A cheap non o ring chain sprayed often with something sticky and slippery from wal mart will last 4000-5000 miles. It will cost $50 (or less) by the time you are done.

So I buy the $30 chain and the $2 lubricant, use a lot of lube often, carry a spare master link, and just replace the chain every 5k miles.

Once a single ring fails on an o-ring or x-ring chain, its in many ways back to just a $30 chain. I can't imagine those seals lasting long on a dirt bike.

Makes me appreciate my other bikes belt drive! : )

How do you like the XChallenge? Looks like a very cool bike. What are they going for?

I raise the rear wheel off the ground. Rotate wheel and spray tri-flow on my RK 530 O-ring chain, wipe off excess. Done.

All I ever used are o-ring chains on dirt bike with no problems.

Dupont Teflon lubricant (from Lowes, Home Despot doesn't carry it) is as close to a majik elixer as you're going to find for chain lube -- let it sit 10/15 mikes, and it simply refuses to fling all over the back of the bike --

I've got just under 20K miles, many of em in the rain and through muck and spooge, and the chain/sprockets are well within tolerance

cleaning, splurge for some chain cleaner, or use wd-40, but get the spooge off the chain soonest

So far its seems to be a great bike. Got it used (160 miles on it) from a dealer for $6k. Wish Buell had come out with a more dirt oriented bike, it would have been my first choice.

I'll bet you have nothing but an absolute hoot and holler on the challenge . . .

I'm with Bill. Buy "decent", lube often with anything slick enough to slide the family cat across the linoleum floor in the kitchen . . . RIDE . . SMILE . . . REPEAT (the chain, not the cat)
