Just got my bike back from having some minor warranty work performed.

One of the things I pointed out when I dropped the bike at the dealership was some oil on the upper surface of the case...around the rear base gasket and spanning the upper surface of the primary cover.

I really couldn't tell if the rear base gasket was seeping, if the primary cover was seeping or, I thought, perhaps oil was dripping down from the airbox.

In the end, the mechanic said there is a rubber plug that is part of the stator assembly. It's basically a grommet that is integral to the stator wiring and is supposed to create a seal where the stator wiring bundle exits the case (toward the cylinder base).

He said it's common for these to leak and the typical repair involves replacing the stator (since the plug is part of the entire assembly) and then using some silicone around the plug during installation.

They implied it's very common on Sportsters (I used to have a XL...never saw any oil in this location) and that it would be done under warranty if I so desired.

Just curious if anyone has seen this before?

That was a pretty common leak on the tubers, but I thought the XB's were pretty immune to it. No reason you'd really have to replace the stator, you could remove the primary cover, primary chain, sprocket, and clutch, pull the plug and wires back through the back side of the primary, seal it with RTV, and reassemble.

Or you could live with a minor weep and not worry about it.

I think I'd clean it off really well and see if it shows up again.

No reason you'd really have to replace the stator, you could remove the primary cover, primary chain, sprocket, and clutch, pull the plug and wires back through the back side of the primary, seal it with RTV, and reassemble.

Considering it's covered under warranty and that I'd have to ride three hours to my parents house just to have the space to do all of that, I think I'll let the dealership do it at no cost to me.

It's not something that has to be done right away. I can wait until January when I'll be riding a lot less and the dealership service center will be next to empty.

Have you pulled your airbox cover? Do you keep your oil level at the top of the marks on the dip stick? It can pump oil into the air box if it is too full. (but then I have never heard of a mechanic guessing wrongly)

I haven't pulled the cover lately. But I've already considered this scenario...that's what I was alluding to when I wrote "or, I thought, perhaps oil was dripping down from the airbox. " in my original post.

I've found that whether I want to keep the oil level at the top of the marks or not, it will not stay there. I can only assume that oil has been deposited back into the airbox.

Perhaps that is the source of the oil I'm seeing. But I took a closer look at the "plug" with a flashlight and it does appear to be emanating from that area.
