Okay guys i really want a buell bad.. I could buy one but im in a dilema. I have a 99" motor which i was goin to build a sportster around. I thought and research the possibility of putting it into say a x1. and came to the conclution that the frame would need to be modified. Being that i wasnt familure with a tuber chassis, so i bought a sportster roller (not a deal breaker)and planned to build a sportster. but all id be doing to trying to make it act like a buell. buell front end brakes swingarm etc.. lots of fun work but with only half the results as a buell. So guys ive been researching this frame mod, and what i was worried about before was the tank. but as i look closer where the tube goes around the rear rocker the tanks riding along the top of the tube. so by me cutting the tube out and moving it a half inch out to the side, giving the rocker enough room. makes it a easy job. So i figured u guys will have some insight to this dilemna. My engine will be a 1/2 inch higher then stock. am i missing something? it seems like a pretty easy mod if indeed im seeing it correctly, and there isnt any body parts that need modification? |

I would also check for clearance where your fuel line comes out of the bottom of the tank to make sure it doesn'hit the top of your motor.... |

How qualified a welder are you? I ask because Buell tube frames aren't built out of the thick heavy stock Harley frames are. I forget the exact guage 'Tuber frames are built of, but it's thin high tensile stuff, in fact only slightly thicker than BMW's frame tubing. So unless your qualified and have the equipment to work with tubing thinner and lighter than the "gas pipe" Harley uses for their frames, I wouldn't mess with a 'Tuber frame. |

Where does the fuel line come out off? rear of the tank? does the tank sit lower then the top of the frame tubes? Buellgrrrl- Im not a welder by trade but i a mig and tig available to me. im not worried about the welding part.

The petcock (if you are going with a carbed motor) comes off the bottom rear of the tank on the left side (looking down from the top). Probably 6 inches or so from the back edge of the tank. In stock form it comes down inside the frame rails sort of near the rear rocker box, but off to the side if I remember correctly. A service manual or some of the more detailed pix on this site might give a good view. Look at the "Cool Buell Pictures" topic and see if you can find a good picture. |

Actually Josh, a motor with .500 increase in deck height will not interfere with the tube frame or fuel tank. The only modifications needed are to the front motor mount & center link spacer; they need to be reduced in height proportionately to deck height growth. As for the front mount S&S makes a mount for that application. Let me know if you need pics of clearance…. |

well this is all good news. i actually found a x1 roller which im buying, it just needs a tail section, and possibly handle bar and controls (wheely gone wrong). and i am using a carb set up so i might need some spacers for that to get the arb outside the frame, but im unsure of that too. rickie d i would love some pics to check out. jmr1283@aol.com thanks guys great stuff |

problem rickie the motors are allowed to move up and down , so it would be nice to know how much the motor typicaly moves. i dont think it would be nice to have the motor bouncing of the frame. so if just sitting there, the engine has clearence. would it stay that way driving> |

i think i figured another possibility. instead of using a custom front and top mount, id us stock size(but for xb heads) front and top mount. making the front heim joint off the oil filter boss at a weird angle comprimising its purpose. so i would have to cut the frame and lower it to make that heim joint parallel to the ground. it would raise the rear but im not sure if thats a bad thing. am i missing any other connections? |

I'm confused, you have 99 buell or sporty motor but it will be a 1/2" taller, big bore,whatever? Now you will buy an X1 roller-but you are going to use a Sportster tank? You want it to be half a buell but look like a sporty? If I'm not mistaken you don't need anything since the big bore kits, I think, work with some new front and center mount to a point in a tuber chassis. With a buell tank what me worry? |
