Ok,now I have a question... The website says that if the ballast reach a temp of 105 degrees, it will shut down the light. Unfortunate for me, Dallas has been hovering at 105 to 108 for the last couple of weeks. Am I seriously going to have issues with my HID's due to ambient temperatures? | ||

Ulyssesguy, This is what ii says on their site... ★ When installing HID Xenon Lamp, you should place the ballast in a drafty area to dissipate heat. Do not place the ballast near the engine or fan which will give off a lot of heat. If the ballast temperature goes up to 105 degrees, the over heat protection will automatically shut off the power. This is their specs and if I do the conversion the lamp will operate up to 185*f, but that does not speak to the ballast. I have an HID low beam set-up for my Uly, but not this brand. Like most people doing this upgrade, I mounted the ballast and igniter inside the front cowl, along with the its relay tied to a PIAA 510 fog light, plus another relay tied to the PIAA 510 driving light. I have one switch for the HID low beam and the fog light, so I can start the bike with just the city lamp on. Once the Uly is up and running, then I turn on the HID (and fog light). I have had a few times when the fog light came on, and not the HID, but this seems more like it didn't ignite properly. Turning the switch off, and back on has never failed to get things functioning properly. I have never had the HID shut off otherwise. This includes daily temps (only) in the low to mid 90s, and trips through south Georgia in the high 90s. The drving light has a separate switch, relayed to the high beam (65W Osram). On high beam, all 4 bulbs are on. Hope this helps. | ||

I had mine in mid 90s to 101 and never had a problem... and id think it might be hotter than that under the front cowl because mine is black... | ||

Anyone using the Xetronic digital ballast system DBX100? Slim pack makes mounting behind front cowl possible. I picked one up used because it wasn't keeping the bulb fired and was less than a year old. Plugs right in to the headlight plug and no wiring changes, water proof too. I have a request in to their technical help line to diagnose ballast, control module or bulb. ~jammer | ||

One week and going well. Very happy. Ulyssesguy said he's had zero problem in quire a few miles also. I should've done this a long time ago. It literally took me 15-20 minutes to install. Plug and play. I'm going to buy some for my SuperDuty next. | ||

I ended up getting a set off ebay (xentecs or something like that) for around $65 with shipping. Work incredibly for me. Easy install. I'm not sure high beam helps that much, but I put them on both the low and the high anyways, and bridged them so both lights are on in high. Daytime visibility is VASTLY improved for other drivers. It hurts your eyes looking at the bike coming at you from the front. Not sure if its better than the modulator, but it works and the price was right. One thing about bridges the low and high together, you can do it without a relay wit the HID lights, since you'll only be pulling about 1 amp and change more through the wiring. I'm looking for a set for my Avalanche as well now. | ||

I've been planning on ordering mine from VVME for awhile now, and I just went to buy one set of the bi-xenons for my bike, one set of standards for my car, and then another set of standards for my buddies car. Problem is they want $70 some bucks just to ship them. That's ridiculous. 20-40 I can do. Not 70. I'll be emailing them, I was really hoping on picking these up! | ||

Since they put their operating temperature in degrees Celsius, I would think the other temperature described would be in the same units. You should be OK there. | ||

Odie... Where did you mount the ballasts? I'm considering these, but there is precious liitle space under the Uly's flyscreen. The Stebel horn and heated grip wiring takes up quite a bit. Don't suppose you have a rough estimate on the dimensions of those ballasts, do you? THX Anybody.... How is nighttime visibility? How's the light pattern? Wide enough to spot critters on the side of the road? We have a couple deer here in TX, and I'd like to see them before its too late. | ||

Portero72- I mounted the ballast inside the flyscreen. I removed my horn as I was going to relocate it anyways. I can give you the measurements but you'll have to wait until tonight when I get home from work. The pattern is very nice. A lot wider than stock. A lot brighter than stock also. I'm very happy with them. Easy installation. Price was pretty good. I'm going to buy more from them for my Superduty soon. I'll email you tonight. | ||

Portero72- dimensions are: 4 1/8th x 2 7/8 x 1 1/4". This includes where the wires connect also, not just the box itself. Look at the pic in this post above. If you need anything else just let me know. I thought about putting mine in the airbox but was worried a little about the heat. It's always hot down here in the summer time and the temps get to the point that is listed in the literature from the company. I would say that number is conservative. Just my opinion though. | ||

Would mounting them in the airbox help to keep them cooler with air moving across them? | ||

I'm not sure exactly how much air really 'flows' thru there. I would say a fair amount. I have my airbox barrier installed also so that would help keep the heat down some. I might give it a try just to see what happens. Need to do it before it starts cooling off though. I want to get a new, louder horn so mounting it behind the flyscreen may not be an option anyways so maybe I'll leave the ballast there. I need a horn folks will hear if they didn't already hear the pipe! I guess with ECMSpy you could see what the temp is with the bike sitting there but would have to datalog so see some temps moving. I would say the sitting still idling temps would be more critical though. | ||

Thx a ton, Odie. Time to see if there is enough space in there, or if I should just mount 2 auxiliary hid's on the forks. This is SUCH a good deal, though, its hard to pass up. | ||

You guys convinced me. Ordered. Seems like the least impact (and cheapest!) way to add light output. Ordered the 4300K due to highest light output. No need to be a blue poseur.  |
