Let me first say winning kicks A$$! It was a cool rainy morning at Nelson Ledges and I was getting ready to race. I knew the weather was going to be crappy so I made a special trip home to pick up my poncho, umbrella and RAIN TIRES in the hopes that by bringing them I wouldn’t need them. No luck. It kept raining. I had the rains mounted and waiting. It stopped raining…. Go figure…. The track was still wet but starting to dry….. I will just leave the DOT race tires on…. Time to do some practice laps…. HOLY $HIT its slick! Back in the pits I go without completing a full lap…. Drizzle…. F-it I’m putting the rains on. Scramble, rush, rush, HURRY UP! I look at my watch, its 11:15, practice ends at 11:30! Fire it up and head out…. This isn’t half bad!! The rain tires hold pretty good! I keep going faster and faster, but they don’t break free. This is all GOOD. The checkered flag comes out, practice is over…. Lunch break it doesn’t rain…. What should I do…. Riders meeting… no rain… “Lets back the start up to let the track dry” Now I’m thinking I’m screwed. But there is time to put the DOT race tires on…. Look at the track…. Turn 13 is still wet.. SCREW IT! I’m leaving the rains on. Race time, I’m on the poll and the only rider with rains on. I’m thinking this is going to suck but I will just aim for any standing water I see. Green flag! Drop the hammer! I get the whole shot for about a split second and the 600 cc bikes blow by me…. I think to myself “Here we go”. We are headed into turn 1 pretty hot then all of a sudden I realize I am about to become a Buell rectal probe for the rider in front of me! BRAKES!!!! We “dive” into turn one at a snails pace…. By turn 2 I pass… its all good…. FASTER… Turn 4 at Nelson is rough as a cob…. I am right behind the lead rider… he parks it! I pass on the inside and twist the wick. The track is pretty dry in spots so I stick with my game plan to hit puddles ever chance I get. A few laps go by and no one passes me…. I look over my shoulder…. I see nothing. Holy crap I’m in the lead and I can’t see any other riders…. Look over the other shoulder…. Still nothing!! This is great!! I get cocky. Turn one is fast approaching. Why is the rear tire trying to pass the front tire??? CRAP!! I’m side ways at about the triple digit mark! Right foot off the peg, sliding on the pavement…. “Look at me!! I’m Chris Carr!!” Some how I get the rear tire back where it belongs. “Note to self, don’t do that again” I keep looking behind… nothing. Hit the puddles in the back straight… Look back in turn 13… NOTHING! THE CHECKERED FLAG!! Holy dog balls Batman!! I just won! Not only did I win, I lapped one rider and the second place rider was over 54 seconds behind me! Bring on the RAIN!

Mark, I knew you could do it. Taking advantage of a situation scores the win the same as bar banging across the line. I hope you don't have to learn about looking back the way I did after my first win on dirt in a cage. I literally gave a large lead and a win to the second place guy because I was looking for him in the mirror, well I found him and let him win. I broke that mirror off and never looked back again. Keep your eye on the prize, if someone wants to take it away you will hear and feel them coming, or you will just see him in second place as you lap him. Congrats on the podium peak! You earned it! |

It was great winning on Saturday but coming in 2nd on Sunday's Buell race was by far more fun. Nukeblue (Shawn) and I did everything but trade paint. He got me by .2 seconds and we both had smiles on from ear to ear. It started out with me getting the whole shot and keeping the lead until about mid-way. We ran into lap traffic and Shawn can pass you with half the tire hanging off the track so I thought I was done for. He went high, I went low, lap traffic was the meat in the middle. They must have seen me first because both riders head to the outside of the turn to say hi to Shawn..... HA HA HA!! He got cut off but more lap traffic was just ahead. He was hugging the inside of the turn so I had to go to the outside.... I had my "Cole Trickle" tires on and made the pass with my left hand on my back waving at Shawn.... I would soon pay for that gesture.... The last lap. My spotter was clapping his hands off when I crossed the start finish line... Shawn was on my A$$ getting ready to pass.. He get past me...CRAP! I do everything I can think of to reel him in... nothing doing.. Turn 13, I'm on him like white on rice heading to the finish line, he goes wide I go low... The checkered flag flies.... He got me by .2 seconds.... What a race!! I'll get ya next time Shawn! |

That battle of the Buells was fun to watch. I could only see them come at me for about 2 seconds then watch them go away from me down the rest of the front stretch. As I was walking back to Mark's pit from track side, 2 or 3 people came up to me making "How 'bout them Buells" type comments. It was pretty neat. |
