I'd like to lower my 2000 M2 an inch or two. I heard that some S3 shocks are an inch or so longer than the 16-1/2" m2 regular shock absorber. If I got an un-recalled S3 shock would this work- old shock crap anyway?

It would be too low and may let the swingarm go beyond its range of motion. If you want to change the shock specifically to lower your M2, the best bet is to get a shock from an M2 Low... it was made for this very application.

Don't forget about the forks... you can't lower one end of the bike without affecting it's handling.

Thanks Djkaplan. I am aware of most of the lowering problems and yes, to maintain the handling characteristics I would lower the forks appropriately. I guess adding an inch between the front mount holes is a bit much. Still curious how much longer the S3 shock is since I need a new shock anyway. Can't seem to find squat on the net about this and it just occurred to me as another option. I'm obsessive about the parameters involved, so I need some good measurements.

All the shocks except the M2 low were the same lenght in the 2nd series of showa shocks (with the shorter rear eye area)...
The big difference was the lenght of the 1st series of showa shocks and the 2nd series, that is why the change in the front mounting bracket that was required with the 2nd series of showa shocks...
