I have not read the owners manual and it probably will not tell me anyway. But, Why does fan run when you shut the bike off and not when your sitting in traffic at an idle when the cylinder is at it hottest?

after engine shut off:
IRRC, something about cooling the oil so it does not cook in the engine, cuz it not flowing.

mine runs when it gets hot @ idle and plenty of other times. might want to get that checked.

After you turn off the bike, the oil pump stops pumping. The oil is used to help cool off the engine, and after you turn off the bike, it stops flowing. The oil will heat up, and can bake and boil inside the cylinder head. The rear cylinder is buried in the frame, so it doesn’t get the airflow needed to naturally radiate the heat. Hence the fan kicks in and sucks cool air over the rear cylinder and head to help cool it off. The fan on the 08's and 09's runs less than previous years. Most of the time you will only hear it after you shut the bike off, while the older bikes will run often while moving. Also the fan on/off temperatures is much higher, so that also helps them kick in less.

Rode a 09 CityX today at the demo and I didn't notice the fan till we got back in the lot. I heard someone else’s fan while stopped at a light, but with 10 Buell’s crammed together someone’s is gonna be running. : )

I'm happiest when I shut down my XB and the fan does not run.....that means I have run in the cool down mode long enuf to avoid the fan. Ditto for everything else I own. Shutting down a smoking hot engine is bad. Crap, I even let my mower cool down and it shows..........vintage 1976 "Lady Kenmore"....weekly runner and has never been apart.

Be thankful that the cooling fan is there and working. Annoying at times, yes, but effective.

The fan is triggered by cylinder head temp. The temp required to trigger the fan while the engine is running is different from the temp required when the engine is off.

One important reason not stated is cooling of the fuel rail. For improved hot soak restarts, this makes us and EPA happy.

If you run it at 4k long enough while riding, it'll pop on.

Thank you everyone question answered and they all helped me understand. Maybe the reason it will not turn on while riding is i'm still breaking it in current mileage 210 in about 4 to 5 hours of rural riding.
