Hi All, I got back from an awesome ride through the Sierra Nevadas the other day. On a break with about 75 miles to go, a Buell buddy of mine took a look at the right side of my Firebolt and said, "You're missing your nuts!" The exhaust ring clamp that holds the header to the cylinder head was dangling where the rear header and front header meet. I though I had heard an exhaust leak. The nuts that held the clamp to the cylinder head just came off. I'm a bit away from a Buell dealership (and honestly, I don't think they'd have parts for it on hand) but does anyone know if the ones that hold the ones on Sporties are the same spec? TIA | ||

Yep - you can get them from a Sportster I can't remember the torque but it is NOT MUCH - see if you can get a manual (I'm at work and won't see mine for another 10 hours) I'd also recommend getting new exhaust gaskets since with the clamp having come off, the gasket in the exhaust will have been thrashed by the shaking pipe. Get the Screaming Eagle gaskets, not the stock exhaust gaskets. They just seem to hold up better. | ||

From the '05 Firebolt manual: Exhaust Header 1. See Figure 2-110. Install exhaust ring (4), retaining ring (5) and new port gasket (6). 2. Install exhaust header (2). Tighten mounting fasteners (3) to 72-96 in-lbs (8-11 Nm). (Note inch-pounds not foot-pounds) | ||

Oh BTW, Slaughter, you mentioned getting the Screamin' Eagle gaskets. Do you have the size or part number for my '05 12R? (or anyone else for that matter) TIA again... | ||

Thats just a good ol' harley motor, even if it is the Thunderstorm engine it still vibrates like hell! My sportster did the exact same thing about a year ago, and the guy at the parts counter said he'd never heard of such a thing and i told him i had a prime example of it right outside for him. If anything I think my '05 Firebolt vibrates waaaaay worse that my '06 Sporty and my '97 Fatboy combined. I just learned to keep exhaust nuts on hand... | ||

In a pinch, those are 5/16-24 NF nuts, available in most any auto parts or hardware stores. Oh yeah, get twice the amount needed and double-nut them. (Message edited by sparky on August 28, 2008) | ||

I have just asked for the SE gaskets - and that is ONE thing that Harley Dealers seem to ALWAYS have in stock. I'm stuck at work right now and can't get you the info but If I recall - the Buell exhaust gaskets are common through all the models/engines for the air-cooled motors... therefore common to the Sportsters. The parts staff should be able to get them for you. | ||

i have problems keeping bolts to hold my Buell chin spoiler on. also lost the flange nuts off the front header pipe. rattled horribly while riding could have sworn i had serious engine trouble. | ||

UPDATE! So, I get the nuts to put back on the bike from HD. Sounds easy enough. I got the lower nut hand tight and go to torque it down. I squared up the socket with the nut, turn the torque wrench ONE turn, and SNAP!!! The stud breaks with about a quarter inch's worth of it still in the head. A buddy of mine came over and we tried to easy it out, but the leftovers of the stud will just not come loose of the head. As of now, I am treating the remnants with LOOSEN-IT hoping we can back it out tomorrow. To be honest, it looks like we're gonna have to drill it all out and then put a heli coil in for the stud. Any other ideas or cautions regarding this? TIA |
