Bike stats - 2008 XT, 2500 miles, ECM reflash done about 200 miles ago. In the last week I noticed that if I ride and get the engine completely warmed up, and then shut the bike off for a small time frame (15 minutes or so), when I start the bike up again the idle shoots from 1100 to just over 2000 and then back again. This happens several times, but then goes away after a few minutes of riding.

Ideas? Incorrect reflash? Fuel pump?

My '07 acted that way when I had the idle set a tad too high.

My '08 does the same thing, the shop(s) don't have a clue. I took it to Hals when I was at homecoming, they couldn't resolve the problem.
Now that I'm back home, I've dropped the bike off at a local shop, who've had for a month now, and still nothing.
I'm ready to just get it back and figure it out myself!

Don't know about your specific issue - don't have an '08. But in other vehicles such behavior can be caused by 1) incorrect TPS setting, 2) high idle setting, or, most likely 3) vacuum leak.

Spray some carb cleaner around the intake manifold/cylinder interface. You'll know.

Thanks Red - I spoke with the service manager and he seems also to think its an improper TPS setting. I am taking my bike in tomorrow for a look.

Have him rule out the vacuum leak while he is in there. 10 second job once everything is open.

Well no vacuum leak, TPS setting confirmed as fine, and still the same issues with idle surging. And I noticed that my mileage is actually a little less per since the reflash. I am tempted to ask them to put the original codes back on.

You said your problem was after riding and then taking a 15 minute break. While riding your cylinders are growing up and apart from each other. The intake o-rings have to compensate for that because your manifold is getting cold air running through it and keeping it from expanding. Once you shut it down it goes into heat sink and your cylinders start shrinking and the manifold starts growing. This constant back and forth movements can cause intake leaks. They don't always leak, they will sometimes leak only when hot, or only when cold or only when hot and then sitting for 15 minutes! They need to test it when your having the problem.

Tootal - thanks for the breakdown. I went for a 100 mile ride today, and noticed that the surge now is happening occasionally when the engine is warm and running. If it is an intake leak, what kind of fix does this entail?

Replacement is the only cure and that is if your cylinders are rotated correctly. If you pull your airbox completely off and look straight down to where your intake connects to the head you will see a two bolt flange. Where the flange is around the intake you will notice a machined area. There will be a gap between the edge of the machined area and the edge of the flange. This gap should be uniform all the way around. If it is wider on one side than the other then your cylinders are not aligned properly. Here's a photo taken of my Geezer Glide after fixing a front cylinder that was not aligned. It is now!!
Notice the uniform gap:





This photo is from the side instead of from above but you should get the idea of how it should look from the top. I'm afraid my Uly has twisted cylinders and it took four tries to get it to seal. This winter I guess I'll loosen the jugs and twist them around. They have alignment pins but the slop in them will allow misalignment. Whoever the QC guy is at HD/Buell he's an idiot! I've had two HD's and the Uly and all of them were bad from the factory. Anyway, check this gap and if that's your problem then you'll need to align them. If they are ok, you could still be leaking but just a simple o-ring change should fix it right up. Use Genuine James Blue Silicone o-rings. Better design and material than stock. Good luck,

There were none from the factory and the torque is pretty light. 96 - 144 in. lbs. The cap catches the inner part of the slot so it's not just touching the sides. I agree it would be better but I don't know about necessary. There are none on a Buell either.

I've gotten my bike back from the shop, and still have the problem.
they did not do a reflash, although they did replace the intake seals.
When the clutch is pulled in, the RPM's first go up about 500 RPM's then very slowly come down.
sometimes the idle jumps about 1000 RPM's it varies depending on the temperature, it seems.
I am also having surging issues around 2500 RPM although I'm not sure if it is related.
My TPS was right on the money, and there was no vacuum leaks...
Any other theories?
This is getting frustrating...

Try taking off the right side cover where you can get to the intake and spray some carb cleaner in there. If it kills the engine then they didnt replace the seals or improperly installed. Still sounds like a leak.

Genuine James Blue Silicone o-rings...
Hey Tootal, this makes all kinds of sense. I purchased a couple sets of H-D seals for on-hand inventory, and they are no great shakes. I googled Genuine James Blue Silicone o-rings and got hits, but dang if I can find what I want. Gotta link?

The real solution is the same one for my 3.4L V6 crossover pipe in my '87 4Runner, and for EXACTLY the same reason: the intake needs a flex coupler, and that will be that. There is no allowance for cylinder expansion. Should be straightforward and the first guy to market will sell quite a few.

Thanks much. They had 6 on hand, I got two (XB12X, XB9s preventative measures).

I'd like to do this once, when/if it happens. Sounds like when, not if.

Another buck two ninety-eight Buell fix. Gotta love it. Wish the mothership would just let them use these seals from the factory.
