Any of you guys running a aftermarket exhaust with a high flow filter, who are not using emcspys to tune? Reason for asking, will the bike really run lean, or is that a bunch of BS. I know this topic came up in the past, but I'd like bring it up again. I think it's a bunch of BS. Who knows, it may give better gas mileage. Im sick and tired a looking at my K&N sit on the shelf in the garage. |

Yea, I do. I have a K&N with a HPC Micron, and no ECM work. At the tip of the pipes, it's nice and black, suggesting plenty of fuel (they're sposed to look greyish if it's lean, no?) Anyways, runs like a fuggen charm, so I ain't gonna bother! |

I did read somewhere that the 08 ECM overcompensates (hence the black tips), but then I also heard that after about a 10 minute ride, it re programms itself to learn the new exhaust/filter/whatever, and I'm pretty fuggen certain I don't have off idle stumbles/surging problems. |

Your Fine. I wouldn't worry about it. |

Oh I did forget to point out I got irridium plugs too, and apparently that makes a bit of a difference. |

The ecm is capable to compensate, But it is made for the original exhaust, a micron for example needs a lot more fuel in different regions, The ecm learns in a lower region, and compensates that to the whole fuel map, Believe me black exhaust tip is no guarantee it will not lean in some regions off the rpm / tps range, Full throttle almost all exhaust give a good af reading, but al the other tps positions ( cruise ect. ) can be lean, very lean, Notched by stumbling in lower rpm’s , hiccups when throttling up |

Oh. I see. Did you read the bit where I pointed out I didn't have the off idle stumble or surging dramas? And as for fueling, I'm getting about 6.9 litres per 100 kays (bout 240ish kays to a tank, or about 160 miles) for a 12Ss, so the fuel's going somewhere! I would do an ECm upgrade if: a) I had low idle stumbles b) The mileage bothered me c) There was performance problems through accelaration or constant revs(ie cruising) But, I haven't got these problems. Bike runs fine. Maybe it's the filter/exhaust/plug combo being installed from new? Dunno. Either way, the thing doesn't feel hot and seems to be performing well, so why would I fix something that isn't broken? |

Look at your plugs- if they're a little tan/gray you're probably OK. If they're pure white you might be lean. |

You're right: it doesn't hurt to throw in a dyno tune. 9 times out of 10 it will do wonders. But, he was asking if he could get away with it, and I reckon the answer is yup. Like murraebueller said - check the plugs - white is too lean. |

I just threw the K&N on yesterday. Would I be good if I only checked the front plug? Would that give me an accurate reading? |

Dunno mate. I think the rear runs a little richer to compensate for the extra heat, so my guess would be if you checked the leaner plug (ie the front), you should have a decent indication of what you have. |
