What grease do the wheel bearings originally come with and how can I tell if it is compatible with Mobil 1 Synthetic grease? http://www.mobil.com/canada-english/lubes/pds/ioca enpvlmomobil_1_synthetic_grease.asp |

What oil to use? This question always gets a lot of response in M/C forums (also car forums - check out clubcobra.com and search for oil). I have used practically every dino and synthetic there is in street ridden and race bikes. Cars too in Alaska when I lived there. Synthetic is the only oil I use and have settled on Amsoil for my Buells (Schaeffer is good too). I use the 20W50 M/C oil in the bag and the chain case. It works great. That nonsense about H-D not approving any other oil but Syn-3 is hokum. They didn't recommend synthetic before they came out with their own syn and now it's the only one???? They make money off all that H-D branded stuff so what do you think they would recommend? They can't tell you what brand of oil to use as long as it meets their API designation. Your warranty is safe. Amsoil 20W50 in every orifice for me. By the way, you can fill the chaincase from the top inspection hole or the main clutch cover. Matters not..... Just don't put more than 1 qt in there. Tip the bike to the left when you drain the chain case and you'll get most all of it out. Cut up a plastic milk jug to keep the oil from dosing your muffler and aim the spout at your drain pan. |

Dear Santa- maybe you shouldn't post stuff so late at night, I think it was past your bedtime.....speedfreak's question WAS NOT about oil, at all. edited to add--speedfreak, do you have a svc.manual? Perhaps it would have info on the wheel bearing grease. (Message edited by packrat on August 28, 2008) |

The original poster's question is about grease in wheel bearings which are sealed. Sealed bearings are not serviceable items. Doesn't that make the type of grease in them a moot point because if a bearing goes bad, you replace it, right? |
