As far as I am concerned if you like the larger RSS, go for it. But the last actual data I saw on the larger RSS ended up with higher rear cylinder temperatures 425°F versus 360°F. The larger RSS helps with the symmetry of the bike but leaves dead air between the cylinders and fools the fan from coming on when it is actually needed to cool the rear cylinder. This leaves hot spots and less effective cooling overall. The best thing I have found to help cool the bike and make the fan run less is mileage. With my bike over 33K miles now, the fan runs much less than when it was new. With the motor parts now well worn in, motion within the engine does not create as much friction and therefore less heat. Most days now my fan does not turn on going from home to work. Riding over the road the fan does not come on unless I get stuck in traffic or the ambient temperature raises above 90°F. Last weekend I put 800 miles on bike. Even after getting stuck in mid-80°F traffic and the fan coming on, after a few miles down the highway the fan turned off again. After dropping down off the mountain to Eastern NC heat, just south of 100°F, the fan ran all the way home. When my friends on newer Ulys ride with me, even '08s with the better cooling, my fan quits before theirs after a ride. So my conclusion is if you want to reduce fan noise and heat from the bike, quit reading this thread and GO RIDE!

This is a family oriented site with clearly stated limits as to what is or is not acceptable to post here. If even after agreeing to honor our simple terms, you are confused about what is acceptable to post here, then you should probably avoid the place altogether. If you don't understand Abe's explanation of why a RSS won't cool the fuel rail as well for the very specific conditions of a hot day and a not moving bike, then that is up for continued belabored, endless discussion. All the ego tripping armchair engineers are a real hoot. I'll stick to taking the word of Anonymous. It's been golden and likely will remain so. |
