So I managed to low side my bike the other night. ~30mph, back end just washed right out from under me. I half expected this to happen, going into the parking lot practice session, but what I didn't expect was to end up with this thing being broken.. I'm a rider, not a wrench, so I have no idea what it is, what it does, why it's there, what it costs, and whether or not my bike is still rideable. Help?   Some other shots of minor damage:    | ||

Man, those pics just hurt to look at.... Sorry to hear that u took a spill on your bike. I wish I had some answers about the cost of parts, but I don't have a clue. I would suggest you check out your local dealer to get a few price quotes. Hope u are back on the road soon. | ||

all in all i think it went fairly well. picked the bike up, got back on it, and continued my practicing. all the damage, aside from that busted whatever it is was cosmetic. the radiator pod should be a simple fix, and to be honest i'm not in that big of a hurry to do it. got a few track days coming up, and may very well end up in the same situation again. that's what i was doing in the parking lot, anyways...seeing how well the bike corners and finding the limits of its lean angle. best i can tell, i simply ran out of tread on the right side. either that or i hit a paint stripe wrong. all in all, i was impressed with how the bike behaves when you're doing knee-down donuts in an empty parking lot  the simple fact is, more practice is needed. Oh yeah...forgot to mention. I was wearing my power ranger suit for this practice session, and it ended up with only a few scuff marks where i slid on the ground, and i don't have a scratch on me. wrists are a bit sore, not really sure whats up with that. so..for anyone wondering..yes, your gear works as designed. Don't ride it, the clutch slave cylinder is obviously leaking. After a few miles, your master cylinder could go dry/then no clutch action. While there shouldn't be any damage to the actual clutch assembly or diaphram, you'll have to disassemble it to verify. I would do this prior to ordering any parts. You can bet on the clutch cover, the slave assembly and ness'y o-rings/hardware at least. Don't forget the helicon sticker and pegasus puck! Drain all the engine oil and inspect it prior to removing the clutch cover and inspecting the internals...add engine oil w/new filter and DOT 4 brake fluid to the parts list. Pull the airbox lid and look for excessive engine oil... Verify the triple tree/fork alignment...this is one area often overlooked in low speed laydowns. Triple check the front brake master cylinder's operation to make sure there isn't something tweeked in there...other than the lever itself. You don't want to find out any potentials after the fact. All in all though, looks like it could have been a whole lot worse than it actually is. Shouldn't take too much coin to be like new again... It appears the radiator pod did it's job! Make sure the "leaf spring" radiator mount isn't damaged? Also remove the pod and inspect behind it for any other possible drama. If there isn't any coolant leaks, I wouldn't worry too much. I don't have the parts book with all the numbers but I'm sure any dealer can hook you up. Call your local dealer, email them the pics. They should be able to shoot you a very close $ number in short order. Again, it could have been a whole lot worse! Glad to hear you are ok. mm (Message edited by slypiranna on August 10, 2008) | ||

fork and bar alignment seems fine, gave that a bit of a test on the way back home. the front brake seems to be operating as designed, other than the scrape on the end of the lever, i don't notice any issues there. i think the throttlemeister/bar end setup really saved me some pain on that one. the rear axle slider is a bit dinged up, but i'd rather that than whatever else would have absorbed the impact. it served its purpose well. looks like i'll be riding the ulysses for my daily commute, and go from there. i'll see what it takes to get the bike back up and running but as you said, it shouldn't take much. thanks for the input. | ||

Glad your alright... For me other than the clutch cover, I'd wait until I could pick the other stuff up on the cheap.. Dark Horse Moto clutch cover slider anytime soon? I've seen them for other makes.. | ||

Same thing happened to me. R1029A.1AM is the new part number for the re-designed clutch cover. The new one instead of an all plastic puck that snaps in the center the new one has a larger puck that snaps over the outside plus it metal inside so in the future will not grind down the clutch cover. List price on my invoice was 317.59 after discount it was 285.83. Right pod cover is part number M1035.1AMMW. List price was 55.99 after discount 50.39. I had not had my 5th gear oiling recall done yet so I had them swap out to the new cover while doing the recall so it did not cost me anything to have them change it out. The kit comes with the clutch cover, puck, o-ring and pegasus logo for the puck. You will have to re-use the 1125R placard or buy a new one. I got lucky between the pod cover in front and the chase harper bags in the back I did not have any damage to my swingarm or forks and did not have sliders. | ||

Zack, The same thing happened to me, but for some reason I was more fortunate on the clutch cover. I hit some sand on an on-ramp and the bike bailed. There was still some of the lip left on my cover at the bottom, so I was able to just replace the plastic puck (dealer had it in stock  ) and it covered up the damage while still maintaining a seal. My mirror broke off the end of the stem though. I had to JB weld it back on, but the blinker does not work anymore. I should have the parts in a couple days. | ||

Glad to hear you are ok. H-ware can be easily replaced. Skin, not so easy. My 0.5 mph fall over scuffed up my T-meister and the puck in the clutch cover. If you call T-meister, I think they would grind/ buff out the scratches and re-powder coat for a reasonable price. You do want to check things out with the clutch like SlyP mentioned. i already mentioned it once in here. i was seeing how well the bike behaves at hard lean angles. got a few track days coming up, want to be at least somewhat prepared for how this bike is going to behave out there. big empty parking lot with plenty of room = knee dragging donuts...heh the problem is, evidently my body positioning wasn't quite right on the right side, either that or i ran afoul of some paint.. my left turns were excellent. meh. | ||

I would take it in and have the professionals evaluate/take care of it. By your own description your not a wrench. Begging advice and parts on the web is a bad idea. | ||

Thanks for your help. Really. I mean, asking what might be broken in order to get a better idea of how to explain what happened, and what might need attention, to the dealership is certainly a terrible idea. It would make horrible sense to at least have a marginal idea of what I'm asking them to do before I do it. You know, it doesn't make a bit of sense to know what the procedure is to fix something like this. Perhaps that would make it easier to inspect the bike afterward and make sure the work was done correctly. Oh...and it's "you're"... as in "you're not a wrench." im not a pro but looks like even with bar end sliders, swing arm sliders and the pods doing their jobs the clutch cover still got chewd..... id look to remedy this before you hit the track cause the speeds will be higher. | ||

speaking of the new clutch cover, i've not had any luck pulling up that part number. R1029A.1AM is that correct? how new is it, perhaps it hasn't found its way to the internet yet. | ||

That is the number on my invoice from when I ordered/payed for the parts. It is the upgrade kit that replaces the old cover. Includes clutch cover, skid puck, o-ring and pegasus logo (for larger skid puck). In fact I had originally looked up the part numbers individually for my parts guy to order but he found the new "kit" part number. | ||

Plus you are not going to find parts from the parts book online, only thing you can find online from Buell is the accessories. | ||

You know I thought I remembered a HD dealership site where you could look up Buell parts but for the life of me could not find it. Also you are partially wrong as either they just added it or.... Also a better price than the discount my dealer gave me.  | ||

Talk about timing. Looks like they must be updating the site with this part info as the pic above has the part number under Product name but I just searched again and it now has the part name DIAPHRAGM RING (CLUTCH CVR) ASSY W/PLUG . So looks like you did not type the number wrong or anything they just happened to be updating the database while I was doing my search. | ||
