Help! I am trying to hunt up a quotation, I think it was by Hunter S Thompson... can somebody help me pin it down...

It was something like "I don't want to finish the race gently. I want to slide sideways across the finish line, all trailing oil and belching smoke, my engine a ruined lump of molten steel, utterly spent and fully realized."

Anybody know the real one?

Hunter S. Thompson quotes:

"The Edge... There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over"
////////////
"Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?"

"Whats that?"

"A fantastic bike," I said. "The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."

"That sounds about right for this gig," he said.

"It is," I assured him. "The not much for turning, but it's pure hell on the straightaway. It'll outrun the F-111 until takeoff."

"Takeoff?" he said. "Can we handle that much torque?"
///////////
"When the going gets weird, the Weird turn pro."

a couple more (sorry they're not the one you're looking for);

"The little bikes may be fun, like the industry people say, but Volkswagens are fun too, and so are BB guns. Big bikes, Ferraris and .44 Magnum revolvers are something beyond fun; they are man-made machines so powerful and efficient in their own realms that they challenge a man's abilty to control them, to push them to the limits of their design and possibilities. This is one of the pillars of the Big Bike mystique that looms so large in the life of every Hell's Angel."
///////
" Whatever they make, if it's faster, I'll buy it."
////////
"My central memory of that time [the late '60s/early '70s] seems to hang on one or five or maybe forty nights -- or very early mornings -- when I left the Fillmore half crazy and, instead of going home, aimed the big 650 Lightning across the Bay Bridge at a hundred miles an hour wearing L.L. Bean shorts and a Butte sheepherder's jacket... booming through the Treasure Island tunnel at the lights of Oakland and Berkeley and Richmond, not quite sure which turn-off to take when I got to the other end ....."
/////////
"Some may never live, but the crazy never die."
////////

my favorite...

As a kneedragger so aptly put it, "Chit happens, and more chit happens when you're learning, and chit happens a lot faster on a high performance bike."

secret decoder "C" = "S"

some words just can't be substituted with "G" rated ones!!

(formerly dasxb9s - still a lost cause)
