I know it's been said that the earlier xb's have a clunky gear box, but what exactly is meant by clunky? When I kick mine up a gear, especially from first to second, it almost feels like the clutch isn't disengaging completely. Feels like it really doesn't want to go into second. Is this the clunky transmission that i've heard mentioned? |

Sounds like your primary needs adjusting. Clunky is more of the noise thats made when shifting, neutral to 1st 1st to 2nd for me. |

It definitely clunks going from neutral to 1st, but that doesn't bother me. I'll see about adjusting the primary when I get my service manual. (Message edited by moosestang on August 01, 2008) |

If your primary chain is too tight, it will be more difficult to shift and feel as you described. |

The primary connects the engine to the transmission. If the primary chain is too tight, it will cause the transmission to bind. Too loose and it will shift more "clunky". Too tight will also cause early bearing failure. |

It does not seem to matter how I adjust my primary chain, I get gear clash nearly every time I shift from first to second gear. My XB has 40,000 miles on it now it does not seem to be getting any worse. Keith |

In other words, will I loose any oil when adjusting the clutch?} |

Well I went ahead and took the little inspection cover off and I can move the chain up with my finger atleast the width of the chain. The primary oil on the chain looked nice and clean, as did the chain. |

Bought my 05 xb12r w 4400miles. At 5300miles the 'clunkyness' was bothering me. I changed the transmission oil and put in HD Syn3 from the local dealer. Best $11 I've spent on the bike. The shifting is noticeably smoother. I'll be doing that every 3000 miles from now on... Nick |

Thanks Nick. that's my next step. I don't have a dealer in my town, but I do have a motorcycle shop that says harley davidson on the window along with a bunch of other manufacturers. Hopefully they have the harley oil. Is it Syn3 or formula + that you are supposed to use? |

The Syn3 was recommended on this blog. It actually says 'transmission' on the package. |
