Hey guys and gals,

Here is the story... with the headlight assembly recall I figured I would just completely redo the headlight system and get what I have wanted for some time.
I would like to put a complete HID conversion kit in the bolt, both high and low redone. I think I am going to go to the dealer, let them install the new assemblies *they said they have to do it* and then I will go back and rework the system to make it better.

What I would like is to hear from all of you that have converted and hear your experiences and what you like and dislike, how hard was it to convert, and any helpful info!

I am looking at getting this set, I am going to call and talk to the company but with my research thus far these seems decent.

http://www.xtralights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIE WPROD&ProdID=1340

Has anyone used them or heard anything on this company or its products?

Any opinions or suggestions would be nice and helpful in getting the best for the bike.

ALSO
I am looking to make a timed delayed circuit for the headlights so that they don’t turn on with the click of the ignition and off when I start the bike and back on when it gets running. I would like the headlight system to wait approximately a minute after original ignition “click” to turn on the system. I know that there are a few people out there that have made such devices and I would like to hear from you on what you did and how you did it.

Thanks,
Alex

Damnuts has a real nice set up on his bike. They are bright, and ran very cool.

Once warmed up, which only took a few minutes, they could be switched on and off like normal lights.

He got them from www.xenonrider.com.

The thing to look for, (according to Jim), are the new mini ballasts.

I got mine from Xenondepot.com (4300k), they I think were more money then they are really worth.

I only did my low beam (I have a lighting) so I just leave it on Hi when starting.

As for the light itself, hands down my favorite mod. I use to hate riding at night but now I can see road better then I can in my truck. I will say that its not the best for distance but it extremely bright for everything close up.

The install was a little annoying trying to find location for everything and run the wires. the ballast box on mine is a little chunky too, so I ended up placing it inside the Airbox, following someone else's idea.

This mod and Heated grips are now mandatory on any other bike I buy down the road.

Thanks G_J.

I love my HID's. I got the 8000K ones for the low and high beam. The lights take ~15 seconds to get to full brightness then you can turn them on/off when you want.

I got them from the website that G_J posted. I got both lights with slim ballasts for ~200 shipped. There are others out there that are cheaper, check Ebay. GREAT MOD in my opinion, they run MUCH cooler than the stock bulbs.

There's juuuuuust enough room to hide a slim ballast in the R fairing.

deets in my butt light thread
(turn signal mod that morphed into and HID install)

I stayed with a regular bulb (Silverstar) in my high beam mostly because HID's don't like to be turned on/off rapidly, and also because I wanted keep it normal as a limp home option.

I really happy with the upgrade. My low beam throws down more light than any car I've owned.

I turn my bike on and let the light warm up for a good 20-30 seconds to let the bulb get thru its ignition cycle before I turn over the engine and have not had any problems.

Thanks guys,
Now my girlfriend would tell you all to stop influencing me, and keeping on the computer and doing research... she wants to "do something today." I tell her this is an important issue, its taking care of the bike...

My question is how are some kits "cheap" and others are rather expensive? They seem to be about the same product why the massive difference in price?

Take starrotors.com compared to xtralights.com; now the xtra people give good explanations and specs on their product, where as the star people only tell you what you are getting and dont explain what they are selling.

What is the difference?
Thanks everyone for the input.
Alex

That's what I thought too so I went with the mid-priced HID kit. Figured it's not the cheapest and not the most expensive so I don't feel like I got ripped off. They even threw in a hat for me with my order.............

What I look for is support. You can get a cheap kit from a place with no support and if you have any problems you're stuck. You can get a more expensive kit and get a little support.

I had a capsule go bad on a kit I purchased. It was probably a little more expensive than the midpoint price out there. I called the company, and they warranty their kits for one year. They sent me a replacement capsule.

I will buy from them again. The kits are good quality, easy to install, and are designed for motorcycles.

Ft_bstrd, i like where you are going with it is both about the product and how the company stands behind their product that matters.
You mentioned that you have gone through some one,but who was it?

Thanks everyone,
Alex

Here's the company I went through:

http://www.texonstore.com/servlet/StoreFront

Here is their site for replacement parts:

http://fanteks.net/index_products.html

If you don't like a kit from what is available or need to build one to spec, you can pull one together from the parts list custom (wiring harness, ballasts, capsules, etc.).

I'm sure there are other good companies out there, but I've had good luck with these guys.
