Hey all- my first post about my first Buell is less than pleasant. It's been in the shop now for almost a week which is sadly 1/2 the time I've owned it so far. The dealer has replaced the exhaust valve actuator because it was cycling during normal riding at a steady 3000 RPM and setting the CEL. The codes stored were P1470, P1478 and P1477. As I mentioned, the exhaust valve actuator was replaced, I rode away tonight and while sitting in traffic, the same thing again... exhaust valve starts to cycle open and closed, CEL comes on and it continues to cycle open/closed while riding at steady speeds (not accelerating). I'm frustrated at this point, because I beleive it to be calibration related and the dealer wants to throw parts at it. They apparently don't have the software to support the 09's yet and have to correspond with Buell tech svcs via phone. Also, they had to perform a recall to re-route some ground strap that could have possibly rubbed the rear brake line. |

oh yes the dealer had to order and exhaust valve actuator for my 08 with 5000 or so miles. I have the bike, but waiting for the part. any others having this come up? |

Not the engine kill switch short circuiting? |

Our 08's exhaust valve was also acting up, tech traced it to loose wiring I believe. Took a new ECM too but no other parts. How do you know the valve is cycling? |

I can tell the valve is cycling repeatedly by 1: The sound of the exhaust... it goes from quiet to the deep, open sound that it normally makes under hard acceleration when the valve opens. 2: Looking at the actuator through the airbox while riding (transluiscent red body) I can see the actuator turning which is pulling and pushing on the cable. As I said earlier... it's only my opinion but I believe it's calibration related after seeing this. |

These posts sound too familiar. Bought an 08 XB12XT almost 3 weeks ago, first night I had it exhaust acted up, engine light comes on, kicks codes out. Dealer checks it out, sends me on my way, 1 week later back at the dealer and they replace the exhaust actuator. The following week bike stalls when started, rpm's bounce from 800 to 1400 when idling in traffic, oh yea and it stalls. It's been in the shop 5 days now, they're working with the techs by phone. They overnighted a new exhaust from Milwaukee, saying the valve was malfunctioning. Dealer called yesterday to tell me the new exhaust was on and it still doesn't run right. Back to working with the techs. Not so confident in my decision to go to an American made bike right now. |

Well, I got it back after a week and a half at the dealer. They finally got in touch with tech svcs who asked them to check to see if the exhaust valve lash was adjusted during PDI... turns out it wasn't and the bike would not learn the position of the valve which is why it freaked out. They apologized to me for their oversight and offered a free tank of gas for my trouble ($12 whoopty). So far, knock on wood, no more engine light, no more crappy idle and the valve seems to be functioning properly. |

Hey-- at least you got it fixed, and can now enjoy your Buell !! Gotta admit though, a $50.00 gift certificate, along with free gas, would have gone a long way towards customer relations. plus, whatever you bought worth the $50.00 would only have cost them like $30.00. But like I said, it's fixed (fingers crossed) and you're in the wind!!! |
